1 - Types

There are several different types of Refrigerators, some are better than others depending on what your needs are.

1.1 - Refrigerator with Top Mount Freezer

This is the standard refrigerator model, wherein the freezer forms the topmost part of the construct. They have wider shelves in both the fridge and the freezer sections. Usually they have two separate doors, one for the freezer and the other for the fridge. These are less expensive than the other models of refrigerators, however they consume more electricity.

1.2 - Refrigerator with a bottom-mount Freezer

These models of refrigerators are unquestionably the most popular and widely used refrigerators. As the name suggests the freezer is placed at the bottom of the fridge. Also, warm air rises, so it does not make sense to place the coldest part of the fridge at the top, where insulation has to keep the freezer's cold air from being affected by the warmer air from the fridge compartment, causing inconsistencies in temperature. Therefore, unlike refrigerators with top-mount freezers, this refrigerator does not consume much electricity and cools consistently.

1.3 - Side-by-Side Refrigerators

If you don’t have room to open a refrigerator door, it would be advisable to buy a side-by-side refrigerator, because, they have narrower doors. A side-by-side refrigerator has a fridge on the right side and one or more freezer compartments on the left. They let you see both frozen and fresh sides of a refrigerator by keeping both at the eye level. They are more expensive then the top-mount refrigerator and have narrower shelves.

1.4 - Compact Refrigerators

If you are single and your primary need is to keep the leftovers and drinks; or if you lack space and you need a small sized refrigerator which does not occupy too much of space then a compact refrigerator would be an advisable buy.

2 - Dimensions

The dimension of the refrigerator is one the most important considerations before you buy one. It is advisable that you measure the space that the refrigerator has to fill; otherwise you might just end with an appliance that is too big to fit in its spot. Most refrigerators are 5-20 feet tall but the width and depth vary. For example, for the top-mount and the bottom-mount freezer models the width and depth range from 20-35 inches (wide) to 25-35 inches (deep). Side-by-side refrigerators are a little wider then the other refrigerator models, the width ranging from 30-35 inches. Compact refrigerators are usually 20-25 inches tall and their capacity ranges from 3-6 cubic feet.
