| Fabulous camera - I have tested this directly back-to-back with my Nikon D50 D-SLR and found it overall to be a superb companion - even taking better photos in some cases!
Indoor photograph (without flash) gives excellent results, especially for 'family' photos, and in some cases I found it captured skin tones better than the D50 (in auto mode). In very low light situations, the Nikon does understandably get better results, but the LX2 is not far behind, only let down by having to use longer shutter speeds and therefore more liable to producing blurry images. I rarely use flash, so can't really comment on that side of it, but I do like the fact that the default setting is flash off, rather than automatic like most point-n-shoots. Outdoors I found that (personally) the photographs were sometimes actually better with the LX2 than the D50! Greens and blacks are particularly well represented to true life. In difficult exposure conditions the D50 does a better job of choosing the correct exposure in auto mode, whereas the LX2 gives variable results in those conditions, but I am talking about complex conditions like into-the-sun and photos with large contrast differences within the frame, in general you would not feel at all disappointed. It does tend to make the image a little 'cool', but I'm sure with a bit of fiddling with the settings I could change that, but not too much of an issue and only apparent when looking back-to-back at images taken with other cameras, or are looking to accurately colour match with real-life. Video results are surprisingly good for a digicam (although sadly it produces .MOV (Apple QT) files rather than something a bit more compatible) With 16:9 option they are good to burn to CD and show on a wide-screen TV. Yes, it is expensive, but you are buying what is basically the same camera as a Leica D-Lux 3 (which is twice the price!), made in the same factory, coming with all the same features and exactly the same Leica lens, so really it is a bargain! Now, if only Panasonic came out with a half price clone of the Leica Digilux-3 D-SLR I'd be dumping the D50! The only thing I was disappointed in is that the casing wasn't quite so retro looking as I had expected from the online photos. I think it would look better with a faux-leather look casing rather than the simple matt black metal. |
