| Kodak DC210 digital camera, which this has effectively replaced. Minolta X700 SLR (conventional). | |||

| Great for price - some compromises | |||
| Stunning picture quality - even after you use software to reduce the image size down ('best quality' JPEG settings that produces files around 1.5 megabytes per image, too large for e-mailing).
Very good dynamic range. Using photo editing software I can often 'pull' usable detail out of shots that are far too dark (e.g. where I've shot into the sun with no fill-in flash) Good optical zoom range (though it would be better if it went wider) Good handling (except for the zoom control which is clunky) Reasonably fast image transfer with the included lead (though using a card reader if significantly faster still) |

| Slow auto-focus - ALWAYS use pre-focus wherever you can (but I gather this is a problem with lots of digital cameras).
Tends to switch on far too easily, often comes on in the bag or when strung around my neck. Needs high-capacity NiMH batteries, 1700mAh or better if you can get them. Don't even try to use lower capacity batteries. Battery indicator useless - shows full immediately before the camera shuts down because it has no battery! Always carry a spare set. Some settings and controls not very intuitive - my wife finds it hard to use even though she's a better engineer than I am. |

| This is a great camera especially if you can get it at a good price. I chose it over the Cannon G2 because it was almost half the price (I did get an extrememly good deal, I bouhgt it in the US for $400, about £250 at current exchange rates, but this was with a pathetic 16 megabyes flash card) but also because it is somewhat smaller, though large enough to sit well in the hand.
But it does have some limitations, which I can and do live with. The one thing I'd most like to change is making the zoom go wider. On my elderly SLR camera, I have a 28-70mm zoom that spends most of its time at the 28mm setting, and the older Kodak camera went to an effective 24mm, and it spent most of its time at maximum too.. Still I give this a qualified recommendation based on the stunning image quality and the price. I'd make the same choice again today, unless the Cannon were seriously discounted. |
