With summer already well on the way, something you should be doing for summer is changing up your makeup routine, especially to include some products that have SPF in them. Of course sun creams are a must and can't be replaced by the SPF in the makeup products, but the SPF in makeup is an added bonus and makeup for easy touch up of your SPF during the day.
Primer is usually the first step in a makeup routine and also the perfect opportunity to protect your skin with a little bit of extra SPF. When choosing a primer, it is important to make sure that the base for both your primer and foundation are either water-based or oil-based, otherwise they may separate.
If you want extra protection this summer, mineral make-up may be a good choice. With this, you can count on UV protection of around SPF 15. It’s the zinc in the make-up that protects your skin from the UV radiation. Just be careful about which mineral make-up you buy. It’s currently legal to market your product as mineral make-up despite it only containing a few per cent of minerals. The cheaper products often contain other ingredients that aren’t good for your skin. Aim for products with fewer ingredients. For example, you can use mineral powder while you’re sunbathing.

There are many foundations specially developed to provide good sun protection. And the thicker these are, the less radiation gets through. But you have to be very careful if you're applying thicker layers to sensitive skin. Liquid foundation containing oil can go rancid in the heat. Choosing a foundation providing sun protection counteracts early signs of ageing and pigment patches. But because the SPF value of foundation is relatively low, it’s always best to supplement this with a sunscreen with a higher SPF – one that’s designed to work well on your face together with make-up.
Foundation with sun protection
The golden rule for using SPF is reapply, reapply, reapply throughout the day, even if you have used makeup with SPF. But how do you do that without ruining your makeup? There are actually some really great options these days, such as SPF sticks and sprays that you can easily keep in your bag and use to touch up throughout the day and don't forget about your lips.
There are several types of sunscreens to use on the body, so pick the type that you prefer. It is important to aim for the highest possible SPF. Keep in mind that it is easy to forget to apply sunscreen to areas that are covered by clothing, but these parts also need protection. Even though clothing provides some protection, the sun's harmful rays can still reach through the fabric.
