New Sony PlayStation 5 set for release in 2020 holiday season

ByPriceRunner Updated October 23, 2019

Sony’s president and CEO Jim Ryan has now confirmed the new name of their upcoming console, the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 and has also confirmed the system is set for release at the end of 2020.

Preliminary news and specifications for the PS5

The PlayStation 5 is already creating a buzz trending highly on the list of the most popular products (currently holding the 2nd highest position) in spite of not even having been released yet. This hype isn’t at all unusual, with the PS4 Pro being realised 3 years ago and the original PS4 model having been released around 6 years ago. The time for new hardware has come!

In hopes of controlling our excitement and curiosity, we’ve summarised all the preliminary info about the PS5 here:

  • The official console name will be PlayStation 5
  • Release date will be at the end of 2020
  • Controllers will feature Adaptive L2/R2 Triggers
  • The controllers will finally get a USB-C port
  • Haptic Feedback will replace the classic vibrating function for controllers
  • Sony is investing heavily in exclusive AAA titles for the console, lesser focus on indie games.
  • Custom 7nm 8-core AMD CPU based on the 3rd generation Ryzen architecture with a Radeon Navi GPU.
  • Ray-tracing support
  • 8K TV screen resolution support (but probably only for other media formats, not games)
  • 4K resolution in 120 Hz
  • SSD instead of traditional hard drive
  • 3D immersive audio
  • Backwards compatibility with PS4 games
