Three tips when buying a log splitter

Different splitting pressures are required depending on the type of wood you want to split. If you want to split knotty and difficult wood, such as oak or birch, you will need a more powerful machine.

It can be tempting to buy the log splitter with the best performance at the best price, but this can be misleading. Having a more powerful motor does not necessarily lead to better results. Consider other things such as splitting time, splitting pressure and whether the motor is manufactured by a well-respected company. And make sure that you will be able to find spare parts.

When a machine's performance is measured in tonnes (splitting force) you need to be sure about safety. Here are two examples of things that increase safety.

  • Two-hand control – Two-hand control means that you cannot operate the machine unless both hands are on two separate buttons/controls on the machine. This minimises the risk of accidentally getting your hand caught in the machine.
  • Safety zone – Because the logs are under very high pressure, they can fly in different directions when splitting. A safety zone, preferably stated in the machine or manual, means that you're literally on the safe side when splitting firewood.

Speaking of safety, we've found a checklist for you to make sure you're using your wood burner in a safe and secure way.
