Three tips before buying a vanity unit

  • A freestanding vanity unit can be placed anywhere and moved around if you wish. As it is not mounted on the wall, there is no limit to how heavy the things you store in it can be, which is an advantage. However, it takes up a lot of space and it can be difficult to clean underneath.

  • A wall-mounted vanity unit is mounted on the wall and needs to be connected to the floor drain. As it is not on the floor, it is easy to get underneath with a vacuum cleaner and mop. Check whether suspension fittings are included.

  • A wash basin base cabinet does not come with a built-in sink, like the other models. It is simply a cupboard that is placed under your existing wash basin. This model is good if you don't want to have to replace what you already have. Double check that the water lock is included.

If you choose a wooden vanity unit, it’s a good idea to check that it has been treated to withstand moisture, for example with a lacquer finish.

Measure the space in your bathroom to see how big your vanity unit needs to be. Add 3–4 centimetres on both sides too, so that you have a margin. If you live in a small space, it’s always a good idea to choose smart solutions so that you can make the most of the space you have. A vanity unit with a round front edge, for example, takes up less space in a small bathroom. There are also variants that are shallower than others.

Here are three details to look out for when choosing your new cabinet:

  • Space for an electrical outlet allows you to charge your electric toothbrush or shaver directly in the cabinet.
  • Soft close function makes the cabinet close smoothly. It is a small but often appreciated detail, which means that you avoid the noise of doors that are accidentally slammed too hard.
  • Movable drawers and compartments allow you to easily adapt the space, for example if you're partner moves in with you and you suddenly have to share the storage space.
