Three things to consider before buying snowshoes

Your weight and the size of the snow shoes determine how well you can walk in the snow. The more you weigh, the bigger the snow shoes you need. Clothing and backpacks, etc. are also included, so if you have a lot to wear, you should choose snow shoes with a larger frame.

Even the terrain matters. When walking in deeper snow or powder snow, larger snow shoes are suitable to prevent you from sinking, while a smaller pair is better for heavily packed snow and areas that are slippery or steep. There are also snow shoes for all-round use. These are often medium-sized and also work on ice.

When you are out on longer hikes, it is important that you have snow shoes that are comfortable and flexible to wear. Keep an eye out for the following features:

  • Snow shoes with heels that can be raised are great when you are on steeper terrain, as they reduce the load on your leg muscles. The heel should be lockable, such as for when you're just walking around the tent.
  • Spikes make it easier to walk safely even on icy surfaces.
  • Smooth buckles can save you a lot of frustration, as snow shoes should be easy to put on and take off even when you’re wearing gloves.

Here you can get some good advice on how to use snowshoes.
