Three things to consider before buying an iron

Many irons are heavy. If you travel a lot and want to take it with you, it’s a good idea to choose a travel iron, which is a slightly smaller and lighter version.

Another thing to consider is how big a water tank you need. Do you iron the whole family’s clothes at the same time? If so, go for an iron with a slightly larger water tank, so you don't have to stop to refill it.

A cordless iron gives you the best possible freedom of movement, as you avoid the cord getting in the way and getting tangled. These models are often a little lighter than corded models. However, you must always make sure that the battery is charged when you want to iron – and if you forget and spontaneously realise that you want to wear your favourite shirt, this can be a disadvantage.

In addition to an efficient and convenient iron, there are three great features that make it a little extra easy to use:

  • Automatic shut-off can be a real saviour for those of you who know that you easily forget to disconnect cables when you’re in a hurry in the morning.

  • A steam function is great for wrinkled shirts and stubborn pleats that are hard to smooth out using heat alone.

  • Automatic descaling extends the life of the iron, especially if you live in areas where the water contains high levels of limescale. If you choose an iron without this function, you should descale it regularly, for example with a vinegar mixture. We've found a guide for you on how to best clean your iron.
