The last thing you want is for your torch to be too weak, so make sure you choose one with a long range.
Lumen is the measure of the luminous flux of a light source: the higher the lumen, the brighter the light. 650 lumen and above is usually suitable for everyday use. Having a bright torch may be a good idea, but keep in mind that a high lumen can also cause the torch to quickly run out of battery. More than 1000 lumen can also make the torch quite heavy, so think about what is most important to you.
Solar chargers or cranked charging are particularly useful if you want to use the light in crisis situations where you may not have access to power or batteries.
Think about what features your torch needs. We recommend these:
A torch with an SOS mode will flash three long and three short flashes, i.e. Morse code for SOS, so that you can signal where you are and that you need help in a crisis situation. Learn the basics of morse code to call for help or reach out to others in need.
A waterproof torch is great if you want to be able to use it outdoors or just don't want to be hindered by rain. An IPX4 rating means that it can withstand rain, but not be submerged in water.
A torch with adjustable brightness is easy to adapt to different environments and situations.
If you're going to use your torch in the forest or in wide open spaces, choose one with a wide beam. This is also a good idea if you want to have the torch for running, so you can see obstacles. However, if you want to run in traffic, you should have one with a directional beam. If you're looking for a torch for hunting, you should have one with a green beam, as animals are not as sensitive to this colour. However, white light is better for tracking blood.
