Edible bird’s nest

How to transform boiled eggs into an attractive and edible Easter table decoration.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 eggs
  • Food colouring (whatever colours you like)
  • White vinegar, 1 tbsp per colour
  • Boiling water

Equipment

  • Glasses (at least 300 ml), one for each colour
  • Decorative bowl
  • For the bird’s nest: dried grass, wool, shredded paper etc.

What to do

  1. Boil the eggs, rinse them under ice cold water and allow to cool completely.
  2. Choose the colours you want for the eggs and set out the same number of glasses (one for each colour).
  3. Pour 1 tbsp of vinegar into each glass, add the food colouring and stir.
  4. Top up with boiling water and stir. Add more food colouring if the colour is too pale.
  5. Carefully lower the egg into the glass. A fork may help.
  6. From time to time, lift the egg part way out of the glass with the fork to check the colour. Leave in the water for a maximum of ten minutes.
  7. Remove the egg completely when you're happy with the colour and place on kitchen paper to dry.

How to create marbled eggs

  1. To create marbled eggs, pour extra food colouring into one of the glasses and dip the egg in it without stirring the liquid first.
  2. Lift it out very carefully and allow to dry on kitchen paper.
  3. Place the grass or other material in the bowl and arrange the coloured eggs in it – you can add twigs if you like.
  4. Place on your Easter table.

Our top tips for finding the right shade!

Eggs react differently to the different food colourings, so experiment and mix the colours if you like. When it comes to picking the number of eggs, it will depend how dark a shade you want. As a rule of thumb, a small bottle of food colouring is usually enough to dye at least 6-8 eggs in bright colours. Yellow doesn’t work very well, however. Red, blue and green are the best and you can make good combinations too.
