8 tips for fun outdoor games this spring

Kaelan Robinson

It’s time to abandon the tablets and remote controls (at least for a little while) – spring’s here, and with it come outdoor games!

The sun’s back, at least on some days, the evenings are lighter and youngsters are full of energy. It’s time to hide the tablets for a little while and take the kids out to play.

8 tips for outdoor games in the spring sunshine!

1. Chalk

Chalk is fun for drawing a hopscotch court or decorating the pavement outside the house. Write encouraging messages to your elderly self-isolating neighbours, draw flowers and give free rein to your kids’ internal artists – or yours!

2. Skipping ropes

With a skipping rope, you can get fitter and learn fun tricks at the same time – and it isn’t just kids who love skipping. Keep the children company for a heart rate-raising session in the spring sunshine – your coffee will taste even better afterwards! Skipping ropes come with all kinds of characters on the handles. What better way to get your kids skipping?

3. Soap bubbles

The range of bubble toys is enormous! Everything from organic bubbles from Sonett Bio Bubbles to more advanced bubble machines perfect for young children who can’t yet blow their own bubbles. Why not do your own soap bubble experiments? Get inspiration from YouTube to blow really big soap bubbles.

4. Water pistols

As soon as the weather starts to get warmer, it’s time to get the water pistols out. Invite your neighbour’s kids to a water battle – an easy way to play while social distancing!

5. Sand pit

Classic accessories for sandy games – other than a bucket and spade – include sieves, cars to build tunnels for and a range of jelly or cake moulds. And if you don’t already have a sand pit, you can buy them ready made for easy installation in your garden.

6. Scooters, roller skates and skateboards

Put your kids on wheels. Tackle the skate park with a scooter, roller skates or a skateboard. If you aren’t sure how to get started, there are loads of video tutorials online. And don’t forget protection – a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are all essential!

7. Pogo sticks

A classic that’s still going strong – see which member of the family can jump furthest!

8. Water games

AquaPlay toys have become increasingly popular, with a number of different water play sets and fun accessories.
