Top List: The 10 most popular air purifiers right now (2020)

Pollen season is here and for many this means puffy eyes, runny noses and scratchy throats. An air purifier captures different kinds of micro particles in the air including pollen particles and can help those who suffer from allergies in getting a bit of relief.

Deciding which air purifier should you choose can be a bit challenging and much of it depends on the results you wish to see. For the sake of relieving the worst of pollen allergies, most models will do just fine but there are a few things you'll want to think about before buying.

4 things to consider when buying an air purifier

  1. The size of the room

Which room do you plan on having your air purifier? The size of the room plays a significant role in which type of model you should choose. The bigger the room, the more capacity the air purifier needs to have. All air purifiers have specifications explaining the size of the rooms they are designed to work best in.

  1. Filters

There are air purifiers with and without filters. Air purifiers without filters often don't contain fans but rather use other forms of technology to clean the air, for example, UV-light or ionisation.

If you're going to choose an air purifier with a filter, you should check how large the filters are in different models. The larger filters are often more effective. In models with carbon filters, it's good to check how much active carbon the filter contains because the better filters contain quite a lot of carbon. A filter can also have other properties, such as electrostatic chargers to draw in more particles into the purifier or functions that help to kill bacteria.

  1. Sound level

Sound is another reason to consider which room you'll place your air purifier in beforehand prior to making a purchase. Different air purifiers can sound very different from one another. Of course you don't want to have your sleep interrupted by a buzzing fan! There are also several models that feature a night mode, which have more discreet sound levels and lights.

Air purifiers without fans are often the most quiet because they collect particles without the use of moving components. You can often read the sound level of a given model by reading the specifications and seeing how high it measures in decibels (dB).

  1. Efficiency

How quickly do you want the air purifier to clean the air in your home? If you want it to be fast, you should opt for a model with a strong fan. An air purifier without a fan is also effective in the long-term but isn't as fast, although for home use it's probably rare that you'll be need a super-fast result anyway.
