Three things to consider before buying yarn

The type of yarn you choose influences the look and feel of the end product. Many yarns consist of different types of wool, such as sheep’s wool, merino, or mohair. Merino is a particularly soft wool, and many people find it less itchy than other types of wool.

  • If you’re really sensitive, it’s a good idea to mix wool with synthetic materials, such as polyester and acrylic, to make the yarn softer. On the other hand, this won't keep you as warm as pure wool, and acrylic can start to pill after a while.

  • Pure wool is perfect for mittens. It does not allow cold or moisture to pass through, which is good if they are to be worn by someone who likes to make snowballs. Pure wool can be felted, so it’s also a good choice for knitting slippers.

  • For socks that are to be used in everyday life, it is a good idea to use a mix of wool and synthetic material, as it makes them extra durable. Choose superwash-treated wool, so you can machine wash your socks.

  • For a sweater, choose cotton to make it cool and comfortable on warm summer evenings. If you want a warmer sweater, choose a yarn with either pure or blended wool.

The amount of yarn you need depends on what you’re going to create from it. The pattern description usually states which yarn is recommended, as well as the recommended length and weight of the yarn. If you want to compare different yarns, you can look at the length; yarns of about the same length per 100 grammes can usually replace each other.

You can also use Yarnsub, which suggests equivalent types of yarn to use instead.

It is important that the ball of yarn is from the same dye bath. It is therefore not enough to choose the same colour, as the shade may differ if the ball of yarn was dyed at different times. That’s why it’s a good idea to buy all the yarn you need for your new project at the same time, as you usually get one batch from the same dye bath.
