Three tips for buying a nursing pillow

Unfortunately, you can never assume that nursing pillows can be washed in a washing machine. Many models can only be wiped clean. Other nursing pillows come with a removable and machine washable cover. If you want the nursing pillow to stay fresh for a long time, it’s important to be able to easily wash the nursing pillow if your baby vomits after eating.

There are different types of nursing pillows, which have different durations of use and varying functions.

  • Pregnancy pillow: The advantage of a pregnancy pillow is that it can be used as a support for a heavily pregnant stomach while sleeping, but also works as a nursing pillow and is suitable for larger bodies. The disadvantage is that the pregnancy pillow may feel unnecessarily large and clumsy as a nursing pillow.

  • Nursing pillow: The advantage of a pure nursing pillow is that it provides good support when breastfeeding or bottle feeding. Just like the pregnancy pillow, it can also be used as a protective cover around a bigger baby that has started to practise sitting. The disadvantage is that it can feel superfluous after just six months, and thus has a very short usage period.

A nursing pillow can be inflatable, padded with polyester, or filled with EPS balls, also called styro balls. EPS balls are popular as they feel soft and make the cushion easy to shape to your body. As skin-to-skin care is recommended when feeding your baby, it may be wise to choose a nursing pillow with an OEKO-TEX label.
