Three things to consider before buying a rice cooker

The main task of the rice cooker is, of course, to cook perfectly fluffy rice, but it’s an advantage if it can also cook other foods. The more advanced models can, for example, boil wheat, bulgur and quinoa, as well as eggs, soup, and porridge. Some also have a steam function, so you can cook vegetables and salmon.

The brave among us could try to make an entire meal in their rice cooker...

We recommend that the rice cooker has a non-stick surface, so that the rice does not stick, and you do not have to rub the sponge all over it after dinner. Some rice cookers are so clever that they can sense when the food is ready and switch to the keep-warm function so that the rice does not burn.

If you live alone or if there are only two of you, a small rice cooker is probably enough. A larger one often costs more, which is an unnecessary expense if you rarely prepare more than two portions. If you are a larger family, or if you often have dinner guests, it is better to buy a large one. Here are some guidelines:

  • For two portions, one rice cooker with space for 1 litre is sufficient.
  • For four to five portions, it needs to hold about 1.8 litres.
  • For more portions, go for 2 litres and more.

If you live in a small space, such as a student apartment, we recommend choosing a rice cooker for the microwave. It takes up very little space, and you can keep the stove (or hob) free for other things.
