Three tips for buying a thermo jug

Too large, and the insulated coffee carafe will take up unnecessary space in your kitchen cupboard; too small, and the coffee will run out before you’ve served all your guests. If you often host large parties or organise events such as sports tournaments and club meetings, a pump-action thermal beverage dispenser is a good option. These are larger and more utilitarian versions of insulated carafes which can hold over 5 litres.

Different materials offer different benefits, so weigh these against how you’ll be using the carafe:

  • Plastic coffee carafes are easy to lift and pour – ideal if you want a practical carafe. They’re also available in a wide choice of colours.
  • Ceramic carafes insulate particularly well and are usually dishwasher safe.
  • Stainless steel vacuum carafes are super-durable, which is ideal if you’ll frequently be taking your carafe back and forth to your garden.

Will you be popping your insulated carafe in your beach bag or using it to serve coffee at home in your living room?

  • It’s a good idea to get several insulated carafes. Some thermo jugs take on the taste, colour and aroma of the drink, so it can be nice to have one jug just for coffee and another for hot water for tea.
  • If you’ll be mostly using the carafe at home on your coffee table, choose a really stylish one, and save the practical plastic or stainless steel carafe to use in your garden. There are many lovely designer carafes available.
  • Choose a non-drip version that doesn’t make a mess when you use it.
  • A sturdy handle makes the carafe easy to grip and pour.
