3 tips when buying a food thermos

How much food do you need to bring and for how many people?

  • Regular-sized food thermoses for 1–2 people can hold 0.5–0.75 litres of food.

  • Large food thermoses can hold over 1 litre of food, sometimes more. They're great if you need to bring food for several people.

  • Smaller models usually have a capacity of less than 0.4 litres. They're perfect for snacks or baby food and don't take up too much room in your changing bag or under the pushchair.

Check out loads of tasty recipes to take on your trip, along with model recommendations.

If the thermos is likely to get knocked about, opt for durable materials like stainless steel. Stainless steel doesn't absorb flavours or smells, unlike some porous materials, and it's relatively lightweight despite being highly durable.

More traditional versions with glass insulation can be quite heavy. Adding a silicone cover makes the surface extra impact-resistant and comfy to grip, even when it's chilly outside.

A top-notch food thermos shouldn't just maintain the temperature of your food; it should also be durable and easy to clean. Before buying, think about the following:

  • Go for a thermos that's dishwasher friendly. The heat from the dishwasher usually won't damage the thermos body itself, but it can harm the rubber seals and plastic components. This could cause the thermos flask to lose its vacuum and, as a result, its ability to retain heat.

  • If you're planning to eat directly from the thermos, pick one with an opening wide enough for your utensils to easily reach the bottom.
