Three things to consider when buying a playground

Children like different things depending on the day, and they also outgrow certain types of playground equipment. If you have several children or want it to be future-proof, you’d do well to install a mix of different types of equipment.

  • Slide: Children of almost all ages like slides. Slides are sometimes part of a climbing frame, but there are also freestanding models. They are usually made of plastic, making them relatively light. Therefore, make sure that a free-standing slide will be stable where you want to put it, or try to anchor it in some way.

  • Climbing frame: Climbing frames are available in many designs of varying sophistication. For higher climbing frames, you should check that the child can climb up and down any ladders and steps without risking injury. It may also be a good idea to place sand under the climbing frame to soften any falls.

  • Swing set: There are swing sets with just one swing, and these are often affordable and suitable for a young child on its own. But slightly older children are almost guaranteed to have their friends over. Here a swing set with several swings is an obvious choice. Parents can also join in.

  • Sandbox: Small kids always appreciate a nice sandbox. Some sandboxes come with lids, which can be useful if you don't want leaves falling into it, or your neighbour’s cat using it as a toilet. There are also versions with small benches, so that the child doesn’t have to sit directly on the sand while digging.

Before you order an entire playground, think about what type of playground you want to create. Do you want one that feels natural, low-key and adventurous? Go for unpainted natural materials. Looking for a child-friendly burst of colour? Painted and colourful components are fun.

Children get older and your family can even get bigger, so it makes sense to plan ahead when you've started building your home playground. Draw up plans so that you’re prepared for expanding your equipment in the future.

We've found an amazing inspirational guide for you when you are planning an outdoor play area for your garden.
