3 things to consider when buying a deep-fat fryer

An air fryer will be a good option if you want to use less oil. It's also easier to clean. A standard deep-fat fryer can make food greasier, but it also makes it crispier and, many would say, tastier.

Prioritise safety when deep-frying your treats, as getting burnt by hot oil can be very painful. Many deep-fat fryers have clever features that minimise the risk of accidents in the kitchen:

Additionally, it's a bonus if the fryer is easy to clean. A dishwasher-safe deep-fat fryer makes the task much simpler.

If you live alone or cook for 2, a smaller fryer will be enough. As a rough guide, 0.5 to 0.7 litres typically provide 1-2 servings.

For larger households, you'll need a mid-size model suitable for a more sizeable family. If you frequently entertain guests, consider the largest options.

Consumer advice service Which? offers guidance on how to make the most of your deep-fat fryer.

FRYER

FAQ

When deep-frying, it is important to use oils that are made for the high temperatures that occur during frying. Therefore hot-pressed oils are better suited than cold-pressed ones. The most common oils are canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil and peanut oil- but there are more oils that will work as well.

It depends on what you cook and how long the fryer is just standing in between using it, but it is usually said that you can use a batch of oil about 7–12 times before it is time to change. However, as mentioned earlier, it mainly depends on what you fry – sometimes it is the food or products that make you have to change the oil more often or less often. You can also store your oil in the fridge if you want it to last longer. Many people change the oil after each use, but this is not necessary.

French fries are food that is appreciated by many, and it is so easy to make yourself.

  1. Peel potatoes and cut them in the desired shape
  2. If you want, you can put the potatoes in cold water 30–60 min before frying, it gives better results.
  3. Dry the potatoes and heat the fryer to 140 degrees Celsius.
  4. Fry the fries for 5–6 minutes, then carefully pick them up.
  5. Turn up the heat to 180 degrees Celsius and fry them once more until golden brown.
  6. Put your fries on a plate and season them with spices.
