We have been busy testing epilators and name the Silk-Épil 9561 Wet & Dry as the best epilator of 2021. Forget your current hair removal machine and consider this model for the very best results. This epilator is efficient and gives the legs and bikini area a perfect waxed result. It also comes with many useful accessories and interchangeable heads.
If you plan to use the epilator on your face, the Braun Silk-Épil Skin Spa is our top recommendation. It comes with plenty of high-quality accessories for sensitive areas, both for the face as well as the intimate areas - where it could be used on your bikini area or even used for a Brazilian.
The best budget choice is the Philips Satinelle Legs HP6420, which is both small and light, making it an affordable epilator perfect for transporting. The epilator gives a quick result and is best suited for use on your legs. Philips Satinelle is a really good budget epilator that may lack some finesse but certainly gets the job done.
A reliable epilator that suits anyone who wants lots of accessories
For an epilator, Panasonic’s ES-EL8A is actually really nice looking. Unfortunately an attractive design doesn’t mean epilating is a pain-free experience – but then to be fair epilating is always going to sting a bit.
From the outset, you may think this epilator stings your wallet too, but you do need to bear in mind that this machine comes with a minor arsenal of accessories. And best of all, it’s really simple to change between the accessories. This is an intuitive epilator from start to finish. And even though it’s always a good idea to look through the instruction booklet, it’s quite possible to use the Panasonic Epilator ES-EL8A without reading it first.
The epilation process is straightforward and the machine gets an effective grip on the hairs. If they’re very small or very fine, you may need to run the epilator over the area again, but overall it gives a really good result. We also liked the fact that you can use it in the shower. It’s always a bit less painful if you can soften your skin with warm water first.
As we’ve already mentioned, this machine comes with plenty of accessories – nine of them, in fact! These include a skin protector for sensitive areas, an epilation blade for the bikini line and underarms, a head for shaving and trimming, a comb, and a footcare accessory. Out of these accessories, the head that’s intended for filing your feet is the least impressive. But of course it depends what your feet are like to start with. If you’re just after a bit of maintenance filing, it works quite well. But if you have really tough areas of skin, you’ll need something more powerful.
The Panasonic Epilator ES-EL8A is a very easy-to-use and impressive epilator. You quickly feel like your money has been well spent. Because it’s quite simply a machine that does its job really effectively.
Watertight with lots of accessories and a lamp for a silky smooth result
The Silk-épil 7 series has long been one of our favourite epilators, and with this latest update, it still retains its position. It’s wireless and watertight, meaning you can use it in the shower or bath. The handle is comfortable in your hand and the controls are easy to use without getting in the way. A little lamp illuminates the area to be epilated; this may sound unnecessary, but it's really useful to be able to see all of the small hairs. The tweezers are extremely effective and remove even short, thin hairs. A number of different caps are included and work well for their various intended functions. For example, you can find a shaver head with a trimmer cap, a facial cap and a cap for sensitive skin that will take care of pubic hair. The combination of highly-efficient epilation and excellent accessories makes the 7 series a competent and complete epilator. We think that it gives a large number of functions for the money and we, therefore, name it as the best epilator for the face as well as the best epilator for a Brazilian. Take care of your bikini area with this good epilator!
Small and light with quick results, best to take care of hairy legs!
The Philips Satinelle is a small epilator and almost weightless. It has no batteries but runs on mains power via a cable. However, this isn't annoying or awkward as the cable is both long and easy to manage. The Satinelle has a strong but relatively quiet motor that does a good job, and the cap has a wider working area than, for example, the Braun 5541, which makes it relatively quick. Some of our testers who have larger hands felt that the handle was almost too small and didn’t give good support for their hands. The controls are good, and you won't interfere with them by mistake. The Satinelle is above all intended to be used on the legs and is therefore somewhat narrower than the more expensive epilators featuring in our test, but if it’s epilated legs that you want, there’s no point paying more than this. The Philips Satinelle is a really good budget epilator to remove very short hair, without too many bells and whistles, but does exactly what it's intended to do.
Effective epilator that gives a perfect, waxed result and has a lot of useful accessories
The cordless Silk-épil 9 series is a development of the Silk-épil 7 series, which has been on our radar as a good epilator for several years. Apart from the luxurious design, the Silk-épil 9561 has several improvements that have kept its place on our podium. The best is that the head is 40% wider than before, which means you can get smooth legs quicker than ever. The tweezers are also better, as they grasp shorter and thinner hairs effortlessly. But the most important improvement is that it's much less painful due to the wide rollers stretching out the skin effectively before pulling out the hairs. The little lamp makes it easy to see fine hair in sensitive areas and the epilator even works in the shower – a really big plus as the warm water reduces any discomfort further. The various accessory caps work well for their different purposes. The fact that there's also a shaver head with a trimmer cap means you're equipped for all situations. It’s not a small epilator but it’s certainly a good epilator that gest results.
Dermatologically recommended and affordable epilator which comes with a number of functional accessories.
This electric epilator is the little sister of the Braun Silk-épil 7 Xpressive. It has the same basic effective functions but for a significantly lower price. This means we have named it as the test’s most affordable epilator. Of course, it doesn’t have as many refinements and accessories. Yet, it's still a very competent epilator but if you have the budget it's better to go for big sister instead. It includes two accessories; a cap for the armpits and a shaver head for trimming longer unwanted hairs. The head also boasts massage rollers on both sides, which will help stretch the skin and reduce any discomfort.
Multifunctional epilator that can be used in water
The Satinelle Advanced BRE635 is an epilator for wet and dry epilation. It's designed to provide rapid epilation and therefore to reduce the pain that many people feel when they use an epilator.
This is an attractive product that feels stable and durable when you use it. The battery charges to full using the accompanying charger in about 1.5 hours. You can also charge it for 10 minutes and be able to use it once, if you’re in a hurry. One charge gives you about 40 minutes’ use.
Together with the epilator, you get two different heads – one for epilation and one for shaving. Because it includes a shaving head, you can also remove hair from places you don’t want to epilate. This makes the Philips Satinelle Advanced BRE635 multifunctional, which is very useful. It also includes a trimmer comb, cleaning brush, storage bag, charger and two different caps for the epilator.
This is a very effective epilator. The slightly broader head has 32 ceramic tweezing discs that rotate very rapidly and make hair removal a quick process. The fact that it can also be used in the shower means the classic pain is reduced somewhat. It’s also practical and saves time to use it in the bath or shower. The built-in lamp makes epilation even easier, as it’s simpler to spot thin, light hairs.
The description that comes with the epilator isn’t great. It’s designed as a large poster that you have to unfold, and consists of only pictures. It would have been useful to be able to read more about the different accessories.
But the biggest advantage of the Philips Satinelle Advanced BRE635 is that it works for both epilation and shaving – which means you can do away with all those sad disposable razors.
Watertight with good accessories and long battery life
The Silk-épil 5541 has one of the test’s narrowest heads for epilating armpits and other smaller areas, and although it does the job, it takes a longer time to get it done. There is also a relatively long distance between the tweezers compared to most tweezers, which further reduces its efficiency. Two different epilation caps are included; a massage cap and one for skin contact. The accessories also include a shaver head with a trimmer cap, which is useful for pulling out hair that’s too long when it's time to epilate. The good news is that it’s very easy to change between the different heads. Unfortunately, the controls are represented by a push button that you can easily press by mistake, which can become irritating. A green charging lamp shows when the epilator is on, but we’d rather have seen a usable lamp that illuminates the skin like Braun's more expensive models. As the Silk-épil 5541 tolerates water, it's super easy to clean. This is a relatively cheap cordless epilator, but we don’t think that the lower price justifies the mediocre functionality. Instead, we recommend Braun’s 7 or 9 series.
Our experts in beauty care have tested epilators that remove hair with the roots from legs and body, including pubic hair and back hair. An epilator is the best alternative to waxing for both women and men. It’s also cheaper than treatments for permanent hair removal at clinics with lasers, IPL, electrolysis or diathermy. Today's modern epilators produce less discomfort and can cope with shorter hairs than was possible just a few years ago. The first time you use one it may hurt. Following the initial use of an epilator, most people are able to remove fine hair without too much discomfort or it doesn’t hurt at all. The hairs also become thinner over time.
Ideally, you should use the epilator in the evening. This is because any skin irritation will have settled down before you wake up. Wash and dry the skin and first trim longer hairs with the shaver head. If you buy a cheaper model, you’ll have to use scissors. For the best technique, the epilator should be held at a 90° angle to the skin. This achieves the best contact with the hairs. Stretch the skin with the other hand and run the epilator in short strokes against the direction of hair growth. It is recommended to try the device on a small area of skin first. The skin is sensitive around the bikini and underarms, so make sure to be extra careful here. After the treatment, you may want to use a mild lotion to soothe the skin. The end result? You’ll have nice, smooth skin for several weeks!
Many people find that it’s unpleasant to use an epilator the first time. But after a few times you get used to it and the hairs become thinner and less sensitive. Then you’ll be grateful that you bought an epilator instead of going to a clinic and paying for expensive laser or IPL treatments with varying results. You also make back the cost of waxing after just a few months, even if you buy the more expensive model that was our best in test – the Silk-épil 9561 Wet & Dry. Remember to be extremely careful if you use your epilator for hair removal equating to a Brazilian wax, as you can end up pinching parts you’d rather not!
