Three tips when buying a gaming mouse

The genres you play will affect the features you should focus on for your mouse.

  • FPS. If you play a lot of FPS (First Person Shooters) games such as CounterStrike, Valorant or Overwatch, precision and ergonomics are the most important things for you. So choose a mouse that’s good for both fast and slow precision movements, preferably an optical mouse with weight customisation for just the right feel.

  • MMO. If you are more interested in MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) such as World of Warcraft, it may be worth investing in a mouse with many side buttons with hotkeys to all the commands you make in the game.

  • MOBA. If MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games like League of Legends or DOTA are more your thing, you need a bit of both. Choose a mouse with some extra buttons for easy gaming, without sacrificing precision or comfortability when using the mouse. This option is also suitable for players who play many different types of games.

DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to how many pixels the cursor passes over when you move the mouse. Since there are more pixels on larger screens, you want a mouse with a high DPI count for large screens, and vice versa.

Look for a corded mouse unless it’s super important that it’s cordless. The cord charges the mouse so you don’t have to change the battery, and it also offers a more stable connection with less chance of interference and less lag between the mouse and computer.

It's quite easy to wipe off your gaming mouse to keep it clean, but how long ago was it since you washed your mouse pad? PCgamer tells you how to do it without ruining it.

GAMING MOUSE

FAQ

Unlike a regular computer mouse, gaming mice are adapted for gaming. For example, a higher DPI (dots per inch) means that the gaming mouse can read movements faster than a standard mouse can. Gaming mice are also designed to give your hand a better grip, precisely to give you the best possible precision in the game.

  1. Wireless vs. Wired. The advantage of a wireless mouse is that you get a lot of freedom and don't have to have a cord that gets in the way. The advantage of a wired mouse is that you don't have to worry about running out of battery.
  2. Claw grip vs. Palm grip. Different mice are suitable for different grips. Claw grip means holding the mouse with a claw hand and that your palm does not touch the mouse. Palm grip instead means that you hold your whole hand on the mouse. Which mouse is best suited for each grip is usually stated in the specifications.
  3. WoW vs. CoD. Different mice are best suited for different games. In an FPS game, such as Call of Duty, you can use a mouse with fewer buttons, while in games like World of Warcraft, you can benefit from a mouse with more programmable buttons.

It depends on what you are looking for, that is, whether you want a wireless or wired, what grip you want on your mouse and what kind of game to play. Of course, your budget also comes into play. Please read our guide about what to think of when choosing a gaming mouse.
