Three tips when buying plant lighting

Different plants need different types of light. Some require different luminous flux, while others require a warm or cool colour temperature. Some of our most common plants need the following:

  • Variegated plants, coleus plants and other light-loving plants require a high luminous flux. The variegated plants need this because the white plant parts don't contain as much chlorophyll as the green parts, and the coleus plant’s leaves tend to look really dull if they don’t get enough light. Go for at least 1500 lumen.

  • Flowering plants need warm light to form buds during winter. The colour temperature should be approximately 2700 kelvin.

  • Herbs, spices and vegetables prefer cold, white light. Under fluorescent lighting, seedlings can start to grow before the spring sun appears, which is necessary for dense and compact plants with substantial large root systems. A colour temperature of 6000 Kelvin is a good benchmark.

  • In a pot: If a particular plant needs extra light, there are lamps on stands that you can put into the pot. The advantage here is that you don’t need a wall or window to attach the lamp to, and it is easy to move around. There are also lamps that can be screwed into a standard, optional lamp holder.

  • Above planted seeds: Here a lamp that covers all of the seeds is needed, in order to give them the best possible conditions to grow large and strong. A bar-shaped or square lamp works great.

  • Above several plants: If you want to give several plants light, you can collect them under a fluorescent lamp or an LED bar. You can attach these to windows or tiles using suction cups. We recommend a tubular or rod-shaped lamp.

  • Reflector: The greater the distance between the lamp and the plant, the weaker the light. A reflector spreads the light all over the plant.
  • Heat mat: Sowed seeds need both light and heat. A heat mat increases the temperature.
  • Timer: Just like humans, plants also need darkness to rest. Approx. 10–12 hours of light per day is optimal.
