Three things to consider when buying a hoverboard

If you’re too heavy for the hoverboard, it will need to work harder to move forward, which will shorten battery life. There’s also a risk that you’ll break it – so double-check the hoverboard’s maximum weight. Also check how far you can ride before the battery runs out, so you don’t get a nasty surprise mid-ride.

If you’re a beginner, we recommend a board with slightly larger wheels, as this will help you find your balance. Larger wheels also find it easier to negotiate obstacles. Unfortunately, the larger the wheels, the heavier the hoverboard. The disadvantage of heavy boards is that they’re difficult to carry if you’re taking the board with you on public transport.

Choose the most suitable hoverboard for where and when you plan to use it. There are hoverboards with a top speed of 20km/h. Will you stay mainly on footpaths? Remember that the speed limit on footpaths is 5km/h. Are you a beginner? 10–15km/h is a suitable speed if you’re learning to ride. Will you be commuting to work or school? If so, it may be worth investing in a slightly faster hoverboard to get to your destination in good time.

If it’s dark outside, the same rules apply as for a bike: reflector and lamp on. At Hoverboard Pro you can read more about the rules affecting hoverboards.
