Three tips when buying wader trousers

Chest waders are suitable when you stand in deep water. They reach your chest and protect you even if it starts to rain, as water cannot leak into the waist. Waist waders are suitable when you stand in shallower water. They are often a little easier to move around in, as you are free above the waist.

If you’re fishing in cold weather, neoprene wading trousers are a good choice. It is thick and insulating, making it warmer than other materials. As they are not breathable, they shouldn’t be used on hot days, as you will quickly become damp if you start to sweat.

If you’re fishing in warm weather, choose breathable wading trousers. They consist of several layers of material that both stop water from penetrating whilst also wicking away sweat. However, you may need a few extra layers of clothing, as this type of material doesn’t insulate as well as neoprene does.

  • Bootfoot comes with boots that are attached to them. The advantage here is that you don’t have to worry about water leaking in anywhere, as the trousers and the boots are attached to each other. However, it can be difficult to find a size that suits both your feet and legs.

  • Stockingfoot comes without boots. This means that you have to buy a pair of wading boots, but on the other hand you can choose exactly which boots you want. These models are often a little more flexible to walk in.

No matter which boots you choose, it is important that their grip is good so that you don’t lose your footing on slippery rocks or in strong water currents.

In some cases, you might need a pair of wading bootsas well.
