Three tips when buying wading boots

The soles on wading boots are usually made of felt. Felt is excellent when you walk on slippery stones, and many fishermen feel that felt soles reduce vibrations. This sole has the best grip under water, but it doesn’t have as good grip on grass or when walking down slopes on your way to the water. On land, rubber soles are the best choice.

Studs give the boots extra grip. You can buy wading boots with studs and soles that can be strapped on when needed. If you need to walk any longer distances during your fishing trip, some extra grip can be a good idea so that you don’t slip and fall. But don’t wear studded boots in your boat or when walking on indoor floors, as the studs will leave scratches.

Consider the environment you’ll be fishing in and choose a pair of boots that suit that purpose:

  • Choose warm wading boots if you’re going fishing in the mountains, preferably with an insulating material. If you go up one size, you’ll be able to wear cosy socks, and if your boots have removable lining you can wear them all year round.

  • If you are fishing in salt water, we recommend that you look at wading boots that are resistant to salt water. This is because salt can weaken your boots – both the outer material and the studs. Make sure you make the right choice so your boots last as long as possible.

  • We recommend wading boots that are reinforced at the toe and the heel. This is definitely worth it if you're somewhere where there’s a lot of stones.

In some cases, it might be a good idea to use wader trousers as well.
