Baby Seats: 3 things to consider before buying

When choosing Baby Seats, safety should be your top priority. Look for seats that comply with the latest European safety standards, such as ECE R44/04 or UN R129 (i-Size). Side-impact protection is crucial as it offers additional security in the event of a collision. Consider seats with a five-point harness system, which provides better restraint and distributes crash forces more evenly across your child's body. Always check if the seat has been tested and approved by reputable safety organisations.

Proper installation is vital for the effectiveness of Baby Seats. Opt for seats that are easy to install and compatible with your vehicle. Many modern baby seats offer ISOFIX connectors, which simplify installation and reduce the risk of incorrect fitting. If ISOFIX isn't an option, ensure you understand how to correctly use the car's seatbelt to secure the seat. Some models come with indicators or guides to help you achieve a secure fit, providing peace of mind every time you travel.

Baby Seats are an investment, so it's wise to choose one that grows with your child. Look for adjustable features like multi-position recline options and height-adjustable headrests that accommodate your baby as they grow. Removable and washable covers are essential for maintaining hygiene and comfort over time. Additionally, consider the materials used in padding; breathable fabrics can enhance comfort during long journeys, keeping your child cool and content.

BABY SEATS

FAQ

Most baby car seats can either be attached to the car using a seatbelt or with a previously installed base. The disadvantages of using a seatbelt to attach the baby car seat are that it’s easy to install it incorrectly, and it’s also fiddly to put the baby car seat into or remove it from the car.

The risk of incorrect installation is significantly reduced if you use a base, and still more if the base is attached to the car using Isofix brackets. Regardless of how the base is installed, you then simply click the baby car seat into the base. So for example this makes it easier to lift the baby car seat out without waking the baby.

Most, but not all, baby car seats can be attached directly in the car using a seatbelt. For the odd car journey, it can be preferable to do this rather than to remove the base from your own car and put it in somebody else’s. The base is often heavy and bulky to carry with you on the move.
