Top 12 Best Hair Oils of 2022

How we did the test

Our tests are independently conducted and reflect the test editor's honest and objective opinions. Selection of products and test results are in no way influenced by manufacturers, retailers or other internal or external parties.

We conducted the test ourselves and tested all of the hair oil products for men and women as they are intended to be used by consumers. In this best hair oil 2020 test, we got four professional hairdressers with different types of hair and hair colours to use the products. We then assessed each of the products in the test using the following parameters:

  • Nurturing ability: How soft and moisturised does dry and damaged hair become after using the oil? Is it an effective hair softening treatment? And is your hair easier to untangle?

  • Shine: How shiny does your hair become? Does the oil result in smooth and shiny hair? Is the oil nourishing or does the hair become greasy?

  • Frizziness: Does the oil effectively reduce frizziness and curly hair? Does the oil work on different hair types? Does the oil weigh down fine hair?

  • Consistency: Is the oil easy to apply and distribute throughout the hair? Is it chemical free and will it cause dandruff? How affordable is the oil?

In the test, the hairdressers tried to adopt a regular hair oil user’s perspective by using the products as their clients would most likely use them. Each product’s final score is based on their experience with the products in relation to their price, helping you to discover the best hair oils and affordable hair care products!

1. Davines OI Oil - BEST CHOICE HAIR OIL 2022

A hair oil that is not greasy and for all hair types without weighing it down.

Davines OI Oil Absolute Beautifying Potion 50ml

Just a couple of sprays of Davines’ Ol Oil will make your hair easier to untangle and helps it to shine as if it were a bright summer’s day. Without weighing hair down or making it look greasy, this oil can make even frizzy hair look more polished. All of these benefits lead us to consider this product as the best hair oil 2020 buyers can find.

We found that the oil helped make our hair feel soft and become shiny. If you normally suffer from tangled hair that’s difficult to comb out, Davines’ OI Oil will be a real godsend. You can use the product in regular dry or towel-dry after shower hair. If you choose to use the oil when your hair has been towel-dried, it will also help to make brushing and styling easier - while also reducing frizziness. If you want to use the oil to help achieve shiny hair, we recommend waiting until your hair is dry and styled, then giving it a spray or two of this oil to finish.

The packaging and the spray function of Davines’ Ol Oil is really easy to use and means that you won’t end up with oily hands. The lack of greasiness from this hair product also makes it suitable for oily scalp conditions. Nor is the scent as strong as is often found in many other hair oils. It has a pleasant, gentle scent that isn’t intrusive and won’t overshadow your perfume if you choose to wear one. This is the oil for anyone looking for shiny hair but who wants to avoid the wet marathon-finish-line’ look.

2. L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil – BEST CHEAP HAIR OIL

A light hair oil that gives your hair a shine without weighing it down or making it look greasy

L'Oréal Professionnel Paris Mythic Oil Original Oil 100ml

Mythic Oil is a free-flowing, entirely transparent product based on avocado oil and grape seed oil. The scent has a faint flowery note and feels light and fresh. The slightly thinner formula makes it most suitable as a styling product. Our testers with thin to medium-thick hair preferred this oil from the ones we tested. The oil has a runnier consistency than the others and is quickly absorbed into the hair, but almost “disappears” in thicker and coarser hair. As a styling oil that gives shine and smoothness without weighing the hair down, this is extremely good value for money for anyone with typically fine “Scandinavian” hair. Mythic Oil doesn’t leave your hair feeling greasy, so it’s perfect for people whose hair tends to become greasy when they use alternative styling products.

Light feeldoesn’t weigh down the hair or make it greasy
The formula is too thin for really thick hair types

3. Moroccanoil Original Treatment

A nourishing hair oil that’s perfect for curly hair or thick hair and quickly absorbs into the hair to give a good shine without feeling sticky!

Moroccanoil Original Oil Treatment 100ml

Moroccan Oil Original Treatment is used by celebrities and is a true classic in this niche. It's a hair oil based on Argan oil which has a spicy oriental fragrance – possibly the best fragrance for a hair oil. This oil is dark orange in colour with a consistency that is slightly more viscous than the other oils in this test. Both when using it as a deep conditioning treatment and as a styling product, it felt more nurturing than any of the other oils. The product absorbs into the hair well and leaves it feeling soft and looking shiny. It was primarily test subjects with long and thick hairs and coarser hair who appreciated this hair oil the most. The Moroccan Oil does not leave the hair feeling sticky but does give it a fine lustre and a visibly reduced frizziness, making it ideal for those with curly hair. While its price is slightly higher than average, we feel that the product is very economical in use - and is therefore actually very affordable.

Goes into the hair quicklyFeels nourishingNot stickyGives a fine shine.
The dark colour is not so suitable for very pale hair.

4. Lanza Keratin Healing Oil Treatment

A restorative and softening hair treatment suitable for fine hair with added heat protection!

Lanza Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment 100ml

Your hair will feel immediately softer and easier to control once you have used the Lanza Keratin Healing Oil Treatment for damaged hair. It contains keratin that has a restorative effect by quickly making your hair look less damaged and healthier by building it up from the inside. It's easy to apply the oil and its light formula allows a small amount of it to go a long way, making it extremely economical. We found both thin and thick hair to become smoother and healthier when using the oil. Despite the product's light formula, it's easy to use it to remove frizziness without making your hair feeling heavy. The softness from this oil will last until the day after you wash your hair - and your hair still won’t feel greasy. Unfortunately, the product doesn't produce much of a shine, but it does add some lustre. A clear plus point of this oil is the fact it acts as a heat protectant. This helps to protect and repair the hair as much as possible. There aren't many negative points to the Lanza Keratin Healing Oil Treatment, allowing it to easily slip into one of the top positions in our test results.

5. Olaplex Bonding Oil No. 7

A hair oil that gives your hair a lovely shine and has a detangling effect

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil 30ml

Olaplex is primarily known for its hair rescue products that help to repair damaged hair. While this hair oil is not a rescue product, it’s still worthy of a place on your bathroom shelf.

Olaplex Bonding Oil No. 7 dramatically improves your hair’s shine and leaves it beautifully soft. It has a slightly runnier consistency compared to other hair oils. But this only makes it easier to apply the oil to your hair and distribute it evenly.

The packaging doesn’t do this product any favours. It’s a hard plastic bottle with just a tiny dosing hole. Since it lacks a nozzle to channel the oil out of the bottle, and you can’t squeeze the bottle, you have to shake out the hair oil. And given how runny the oil is, it’s surprisingly difficult to get out of the bottle. This makes it hard to dose.

A light hair oil that doesn't add weight

If you overlook the drawbacks of its packaging, however, this is a top-class hair oil. It adds shine to your hair without weighing it down or making it look greasy (this all depends on how much you apply, of course – you should only use a small amount of any hair oil).

Olaplex Bonding Oil No. 7 has a fresh and pleasant scent, but is also costs a little more than many other oils. So it’s expensive, but a little goes a long way, to be fair. You only need a few drops at a time, so even if the bottle only contains 30ml it’s likely to last you for a long time, which is good.

6. The Body Shop Coconut Oil Brilliantly Nourishing Pre-Shampoo Hair Oil

A hair oil that smells of summer and has an array of great uses!

Regardless of whether you’re looking for a styling boost or an intensive hair treatment, this Body Shop Coconut Oil Brilliantly Nourishing Pre-Shampoo Hair Oil is something that’s worth looking out for and smells good. This is a product that has a number of different applications and can be used pretty much any way you want it to.

It’s easy to forget that many hair oils aren’t just useful for styling your hair. This oil leaves nothing to chance in this regard, but the Body Shop have also managed to be fairly sustainable by clearly defining the other best uses of this oil. You don’t just need to limit this oil to eliminating frizziness during hair styling; it also works really well as an intensive treatment before you wash your hair. Or why not use it as an overnight treatment which you can then wash out in the morning? During our tests, we also tried it out as a body oil for dry skin and we felt that its lovely coconut scent also came into its own here. This oil smells good and did an excellent job in all of these areas. The intensive treatment before washing made our hair feel wonderfully soft. When we used it during styling, hair became shiny, smooth and always smelt fantastic.

However, the packaging is a bit fiddly. While we feel that a pump or spray bottle would have been better, in terms of sustainability it’s better that they haven’t used more plastic than is necessary. Despite this, The Body Shop Coconut Oil Brilliantly Nourishing Pre-Shampoo Hair Oil is a reasonably priced oil that will quickly become a firm favourite in your hunt for products to help achieve beautiful hair.

7. Redken All Soft Argan-6

An effective frizz-reducing hair oil that gives a lot of shine without weighing hair down!

Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil 90ml

The Redken All Soft Argan-6 is based on Argan oil as its name suggests, but also contains the fatty acid Omega-6. The hair oil’s formula is free-flowing and completely translucent, while its fragrance is discrete and has a spicy undertone. All of our testers felt that the oil was highly moisturising and gave a good shine. As a styling product, it also works well for all hair types, and above all, doesn’t weigh hair down regardless of whether you have thick or fine hair. The frizz-reducing effect is above average, and the oil also gives a lot of shine, making the hair feel soft and healthy. However, those testers with the driest or most damaged hair felt that the All Soft Argan-6’s deep conditioning effects weren’t strong enough to give beneficial results.

Very effective at reducing frizzLots of shine.
The nurturing effect is slightly lower.

8. Macadamia Natural Oil Treatment

A nurturing and quick-absorbing hair oil that also has a delightful fragrance!

Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment 125ml

The Macadamia Natural Oil Treatment is a viscous hair oil that has a fantastic spicy fragrance with a hint of vanilla, and another contender for the hair oil with the best fragrance. This light yellowish oil comes in an attractive glass bottle with a built-in pump that makes it easy to apply. However, due to its slightly thicker consistency, the oil is not as economical as the other products in our test. The oil is based on a blend of macadamia nut oil and Argan oil. It is quickly absorbed by the hair and its nurturing effect is definitely above average. The oil makes the hair feel soft, shiny and frizz-free both when it is used as a deep conditioning treatment and when it is used as a styling product. We thought that this Macadamia Natural Oil was at its best when used as a styling product on dry and frizzy hair, while it felt slightly too heavy when used on very fine hair.

Too heavy for fine hair as a styling product.

9. Wella SP LuxeOil

A shine-enhancing and softening cheap hair oil that counteracts tangles seamlessly!

Wella SP Luxe Oil 100ml

The Wella SP LuxeOil is a great cheap hair oil for anyone with slightly thicker hair. The viscous and slightly thicker consistency of this hair oil makes hair feel soft and certainly easier to untangle. However, the oil doesn’t work as well on finer hair. It can easily feel sticky and makes the hair feel heavy and greasy. This stickiness also means that it's quite easy to over apply the oil on thinner hair, while in thicker hair you actually need to use quite a lot of oil to get the best result. The risk that the oil will make your hair feel greasy also means that it's difficult to use the oil to control frizziness. To avoid getting a heavy feeling, you’ll want to apply relatively little, but the dilemma then is that the product doesn't give much of a result. The Wella SP LuxeOil is fantastically good in terms of producing a shine, so if you succeed in applying just the right amount, you'll be happy with the end results.

Everything to Know about Hair Oil Products

Hair oil made its breakthrough as a hair care and styling product several years ago and now most major brands have at least one or more types of hair oil in their product range. Hair oil is a collective term for hair care products that are made with nurturing oils such as Argan oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil or moringa oil. There are different types of hair oil and it is a versatile product that can be used in various ways, but most often used on dry and damaged hair or for healthy hair growth and thickness. The most common way to use it is to apply a couple of drops to damp hair prior to styling, which results in reduced frizziness, a shorter drying time, improved hair untangling and increased shine. Hair oil can also be applied to dry ends to give it a shine and make it softer during winter months and humid summers. Some people even like to apply the oil to their hair extensions just for the aesthetic benefit.

Regardless of whether you use hair oil on wet or dry hair, you should first warm a few drops of the oil between the palms of your hands before drawing them through the length of your hair, with a particular focus on the damaged hair ends. After applying, you should then comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb in order to distribute the oil evenly throughout the hair whilst avoiding spreading it onto the scalp. Another application for hair oil is as a deep conditioning treatment, in which you use a greater quantity of the oil and allow it to work into damp hair for 20-40 minutes before rinsing it out. You can also boost your usual deep conditioning treatment with a couple of drops of hair oil in order to achieve an extra nurturing effect. Hair oil is suitable for most hair types, but perhaps achieves its best effects on dry and frizzy hair that is in need of moisture and care. For fine hair, we recommend that you only use a small amount of oil and only apply it to the very tips of your hair to avoid it becoming greasy and feeling weighed down. If you have very light hair, it is a good idea not to choose an oil with a darker colour than that of your own hair, as this could give it a fairly yellowish tone.

The winner of the luxury category in our test, the Moroccan Oil treatment, is often called the “original” hair oil. It is still one of the best out there as it feels affordable, has a good consistency and makes your hair noticeably feel softer and easier to manage. Our favourite among the less expensive oils and the winner in the budget category of our test is the L’Oréal Mythic Oil, an oil that manages to make hair feel soft without weighing it down.
