The rule that you should avoid sunburn applies to everyone, regardless of age. But children have thinner skin which is extra sensitive. And if your child is under one year of age, it's recommended that you don't use sun cream on them. You can use a sun cream with a high protection factor on older children. The disadvantages of sun cream is that it can easily and quickly be rubbed or worn off when the child is swimming, playing in the sand or sweating in the heat. So it can be a good idea to choose high-coverage UV-protective clothing for this summer's warmest days.
A wide range of brands manufacture UV-protective clothing. There are also lots of different types of garments, and you simply choose the most suitable ones for the child's age and how the clothes will be used.
For small children 1 or 2 years old, a full suit is preferable. Of course there are also UV suits for older children. But particularly with the youngest family members it makes things easier if there's only one garment to put on or take off. UV suits also usually have a zip that means the garment can be opened up for your child to step into, instead of it having to be pulled over their head.
The advantage of a separate sweater and trousers is that you don't need to change the entire outfit if only the trousers get wet or if your child gets food on the sweater. UV sweaters are often available with short, elbow length or full length sleeves. For the smallest children full length sleeves are obviously the best choice. If you choose a UV T-shirt, you can rub some cream into the child's arms before they go out into the sun.
UV bottoms are also available in many different lengths. Which parts of the child's body are most exposed to the sun varies. If they're going to spend a lot of time in the water, sometimes shorts are ideal with a long sleeved sweater on top.
Protecting your child's head from the sun's rays is extremely important, as it helps avoid sunstroke from getting overheated. On the hottest summer days, a UV hat is nice not only because it provides shade but also because it can be moistened with water to cool down the head a little more. Some models of UV hats have extra long flaps at the back. These hang down to the child's shoulders to protect the neck.
