3 tips when buying a fire extinguisher

There are various types of fire extinguishers available, including powder extinguishers, foam extinguishers, and carbon dioxide extinguishers.

It's recommended to have 6kg powder extinguisher for home use, as this is usually sufficient to put out fires in your home, including those that start in electronics. Remember to have an extinguisher on each floor of your home so that you always have one within easy reach.

If you're looking to have a fire extinguisher in your car or boat, 1-2 kg extinguisher is usually enough. Opt for one with a hose so that you can access tight spaces, such as under the hood.

Nowadays, fire extinguishers can also be a stylish addition to your home's interior design. But no matter how nice the fire extinguisher looks, the most important thing is to find it as quickly as possible when you need it. We recommend choosing a colour that's easily visible, such as red.

Fire extinguishers are marked with different classifications indicating the type of fire they're intended to extinguish:

  • A suitable fire extinguisher for home use should have at least an A and B classification. This means it can put out fires in wood, paper, textiles, plastic, and liquid materials.
  • An approved fire extinguisher according to the European standard is marked SS EN 3.
  • The fire extinguisher should also have an efficiency class of at least 43A 233BC.
