The biggest small news of the year - LastSwab!

Kaelan Robinson

Single-use products are on their way out and re-usable products are moving in! A small plastic trap that many overlook are cotton swabs, but luckily now there are more sustainable alternatives. Say hello to re-usable swabs!

The biggest small news of the year

During the yearly beauty news convention Daisy Beauty Expo a piece of some of the year's smallest news also ended up being a surprise big news piece. It's seldom that you hear much buzz about something like a cotton swab. However, re-usable swabs can have a huge positive impact on environmental waste when compared with 1000 single-use cotton swabs. It's therefore easy to see why they've swiftly become sought after by beauty influencers and cosmetics journalists alike.

The world's first re-usable cotton swab

The LastSwab is according to themselves, one of the world's very first re-usable swabs. In the olden days, if you had seen pictures of plastic waste in the see, you'd have the image of cotton swabs burned into your memory. By investing in a LastSwab, Last Object (the company behind these silicone cotton swabs) one can save around 1000 cotton swabs, which is the estimated amount of uses these swabs are intended to last for.

LastSwabs are made of nylon and the tips are made of silicone (TPE). Naturally, you get a case with this cotton swab, otherwise it would be super easy to misplace this little miracle worker. The case is made of biodegradable, corn-based material (PLA) and the packaging like the stick of the swab is made of an ecological cardboard.

Re-usable swabs are super easy to clean as well, which is an added bonus. With a bit of soap and water, it'll last so long that you'll begin to wonder why you used to ever bother with single-use cotton swabs.

5 Quick Tips

  1. Just like regular swabs, you shouldn't use re-usable swabs to clean children's ears. It's often all too easy to accidentally damage their ears when prodding them with small objects.
  2. To correct small make-up mistakes with re-usable swabs, dip it in a bit of make-up remover first and wipe gently afterwards. Then be sure to clean the swab afterward with some soap and water after use to keep it clean as a whistle.
  3. Get inventive with gifts and instead of a rose, give away a re-usable swab - they're a sustainable gift that won't wilt away after a week!
  4. Do you feel like it's a bit grubby to use re-usable swabs? If so it's important to remember that the idea isn't that everyone in your family uses the same swab. Get everyone their own swab, you can often get them in different colours so you can all differentiate your swabs easily.
  5. When your swab's life has come to a natural end, of course one should dispose of it properly and recycle it, just like you would with other types of waste in your home.
