Looking for a massage gun that can help you soften up tired and stiff muscles and improve warming up and recovery? We tested massage guns from brands such as Hyperice, Flowgun and Theragun. For a massage going to be named as best in test, it should penetrate the muscles effectively, not be too loud and be versatile.
Our tests are carried out independently, and consist of the tester’s honest, objective opinions. The product selection is carried out and the test results decided without influence from manufacturers, resellers or other internal or external parties.
We carry out our tests ourselves and test all products as they are intended to be used in reality. We tested massage guns with varying characteristics and price levels. In the test, we based our assessment of the products on the parameters below:
Size and weight: How portable is the massage gun and how ergonomic is it? Can you reach all the muscles yourself, or do you need help? Is it suitable for carrying in your workout bag or when you’re travelling?
Speed and power: How deeply does the gun penetrate the muscles? What speeds does the massage gun have, and does it have a powerful motor?
Noise level: Does the massage gun have a discreet sound profile? Can you use it while you’re watching a film, or is it too noisy? Does it feel OK to use it on the bus or plane without it disturbing other people?
Accessories: Does the massage gun have different heads? Is it versatile? Is it easy to change accessories? Does it include any type of storage case?
The above functions were then assessed in view of the massage gun’s price, and then the best massage gun was named as best in test.
Versatile massage gun with superior performance and a generous amount of accessories
Weight: 790 g Height: 24.5 cm Width: 15 cm Depth: 6 cm Number of heads: 6 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 2000-3200 movements/minute Stroke length: 10 mm Noise level: 60-65 dB(A) Battery life: 5 hr Warranty: 2 years Accessories: Bag
Made by the Swedish brand Flowlife, Flowgun Go 2.0 is a versatile massage gun for people on the go. The price includes six different heads, as well as a practical bag that makes it easy to carry the whole pack including massage gun, heads and charger. It has a superior battery life of more than five hours, and five different vibration levels.
This is a massage gun that is well-equipped for the price class. We were impressed by the specification which, in many respects, matches the most expensive models in the test. This updated version of the Flowgun GO, which is called 2.0 at the end, has a stronger motor that also has the power to give the biggest muscles a proper once-over. Although the motor has developed, it is still weaker than the power houses included in the test, such as Theragun PRO and Flowgun PRO 2.0. Flowlife has also succeeded in reducing the noise level slightly compared to the previous edition, which is a plus. At the top of the massage gun there is a touch function for adjusting the vibration level, and there is also a pressure sensor with LED lights that show you how hard you are pressing. The charging time of four hours is perhaps a bit long, but on the other hand it does have a great battery life of five hours.
Flowlife has excellent customer support and the warranty period of two years is generous. They also have a recycling scheme that they call Reflow, which means that you get a 35% discount on a new product if you hand in your old one. Great for all parties!
Flowlife Flowgun Go 2.0 is ideal for those who want to use a massage gun before and after exercise, during breaks at work, or on the sofa in front of the TV. Yes, there are many occasions when this handy massage gun performs its function. It is easy to carry around, and the included bag is very practical.
The massage gun for the uncompromising sportsperson
Weight: 1.3 kg Height: 25.5 cm Width: 18 cm Depth: 7.6 cm Number of heads: 6 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1750-2400 rpm Amplitude: 16 mm Stall force: 27 kg Noise level: 64-72 dB(A) Battery life: 150 min Guarantee: 2 years Accessories: Case and extra battery
The Theragun Pro is a fantastic massage gun that’s used by elite sportspeople all over the world. It has an excellent amplitude which gives depth in the massage that many other models are nowhere near. At the same time it’s the quietest model in our test of massage guns. It’s supplied with two lithium ion batteries, which together give action time of a full five hours!
We should say right from the start that the price is high and probably at the limit of what a private individual will want to pay for a massage gun. For the serious user, however, this is undoubtedly a model you’ll want to consider. No other models have the same stall force and number of settings as the Theragun Pro.
Depending on which part of the body you want to massage, you can easily set the massage arm to four different angles for better access. But we recommend that you get someone to help if you need to massage parts that are difficult to access because it’s important to be relaxed as he tried to find the right angle. You can set the speed to 5 different levels depending on how hard you want the massage to be and which head you’ve chosen. We recommend that you download the Therabody app, as it contains tips for the settings you can choose based on the purpose of the massage.
As we’ve previously mentioned, the Theragun Pro is the closest thing you can get to a professional massage robot. But this can also have disadvantages. Apart from a hefty price tag, the size is also a factor to take into account. It’s the biggest of the massage guns we tested, and it has a relatively bulky design. If your primary aim is to take the massage gun with you when you travel, it may be a good idea to compare this one with other models. The noise level is also slightly higher than on other models in our test of massage guns.
The Theragun Pro is a tool for you if you’re a professional sportsperson and looking for the best there is. This model doesn’t pull its punches, and with the right help can give you a massage that otherwise only real human hands can provide. We name the Theragun Pro as our best premium choice.
Outstanding massage gun for those who want good battery life and lots of accessories
Weight: 903 grams Height: 25.4 cm Width: 17.9 cm Depth: 6.35 cm Number of heads: 6 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1700-2800 rpm Amplitude: 10 mm Noise level: 61-69 dB(A) Battery life: 5 hrs Guarantee: 2 years Accessories: Case
The Flowgun Go is manufactured by Swedish brand Flowlife and is a convenient massage gun if you’re often on the go. The price includes six different heads and a practical case that makes it easy to carry the whole set of massage gun, heads and charger. It has an excellent battery life of more than five hours and five different vibration levels.
For the price class, this is a well-equipped massage gun We’re impressed by the specification, which in many aspects matches the most expensive models in the test The size is a disadvantage when it comes to power, because it doesn’t have the same stall force as the heavier models that are equipped with bigger motors. This is particularly obvious when you want to massage deep into the larger muscle groups, as it can’t really cope.
Flowlife provide excellent customer support and the two year guarantee is generous. They also have a recycling scheme called Reflow, which means that you get 35% discount on a new product when you hand in the old one. And that’s great for both sides!
The Flowlife Flowgun Go works really well if you want to use a massage gun before and after exercise, during breaks at work or on the sofa in front of the telly. There are actually many times that this convenient massage gun comes in handy. It’s easy to carry around and the included case is very practical.
Attractive and powerful lightweight for those who like great accessories
Weight: 1 kg Height: 22.5 cm Width: 16 cm Depth: 7.3 cm Number of heads: 4 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1750-2400 rpm Amplitude: 16 mm Stall force: 13.5 kg Noise level: 65-72 dB(A) Battery life: 120 min Charging time: 80 min Guarantee: 2 years Accessories: Protective case
The Theragun Prime is a small and neat massage gun with impressive power. The clever ergonomic triangle shape gives users three different choices of grip. This makes it possible to use it on more angles and so it’s easier to get at muscles that are otherwise hard to access.
The Prime package gives the user a lot of good things for their money. As well as the strong motor that we mentioned above, it also has four different heads and five vibration levels, which is unusual in this price class. On paper it has a good battery life, but in our tests it didn’t really live up to the specifications.
The Prime’s dimensions and weight make it easy to take with you on the go. It also includes a practical travel bag and the massage gun is approved for taking in hand luggage on flights. But it can be annoying to use it in public spaces or while watching TV because it’s slightly louder than other models in the test.
The Theragun Prime is a great choice if you’re looking for a powerful massage gun that’s also convenient to carry with you. The package includes four different heads each of which fulfils a purpose. It’s quiet, attractive and easy to use.
High performance massage gun with many accessories
Weight: 970 g Height: 24 cm Width: 18.5 cm Depth: 5.8 cm Number of heads: 6 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1400-3200 movements/minute Stroke length: 10 mm Noise level: 62-67 dB(A) Battery life: 300 min Warranty: 2 years Accessories: Bag
Flowgun PRO 2.0 from the Swedish company Flowlife is a silent and effective massage gun. It comes with a practical storage bag and a stylish user guide. We particularly liked the powerful motor and comprehensive massage package with six different heads. It also has an impressive battery life of 5 hours!
Flowlife has listened to customer feedback and developed an interesting premium product, the PRO 2.0. This high-performance massage gun spans its user base, ranging from office workers to helping top athletes recover in the best possible way. It comes with six different heads, all of which have a specific application. Thus, the massage gun can be used for both heating and recovery. The powerful motor allows a hard massage without giving way, which is usually a problem with cheaper models. You can choose between five different vibration levels, and they are regulated in ascending scale by pressing the on/off button once. We wished it was a rotary control instead, as this would make it easier to adjust the levels up and down. It would also be convenient to have a pause button, as it would then be possible to switch between different heads more quickly.
Unlike Flowlife’s previous massage guns, this model has a slightly lower noise level. This is a clear advantage when you want to use the massage gun in public areas or in front of the TV. Even though the sound level has improved, it is still difficult to watch e.g. a TV series on TV, while at the same time using the massage gun at one of the higher vibration levels.
Flowlife Flowgun PRO 2.0 is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-performance massage gun with a powerful motor and many accessories. The price tag is a bit steep, but you also get a high-quality product with a generous two-year warranty.
Stylish massage gun with illuminated display and table stand
Weight: 970 grams Height: 26 cm Width: 18 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Number of heads: 5 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1200-3200 rpm Amplitude: 10 mm Noise level: 61-69 dB(A) Battery life: 6.5 hrs Guarantee: 1 years Accessories: Carrying case and table stand
The Gymstick CairO Pro is the massage gun where modern design meets performance. It has an illuminated display and an impressive battery life. The package includes a handy carrying case and an attractive table stand.
With an exciting design, the CairO is the massage gun with the longest arm in our test If you regularly massage yourself, it helps if you have the opportunity to reach places on your back that are otherwise difficult to reach. We also like the convenient table stand that means you can have the massage gun sitting out in a more natural way. Combined with an attractive design, this means it has no problem blending into a modern home.
On the lowest speed, it has a battery life of about 15 hours, which is impressive! The illuminated display is both attractive and practical, especially when the massage is taking place in a dark room where it can otherwise be difficult to see what speed you’ve selected. The display also shows how many strokes the gun has delivered during the session, which may be slightly unnecessary information. At the bottom of the arm there’s a small LED that shows how much battery is left in percent. This is a very practical detail, and the CairO is the only massage gun in our test to have it.
The CairO Pro offers a wide range of vibration levels with a high maximum speed. It massages as deep as the specification promises until resistance increases. For example, when testing with deeper massage on the back of our tester’s thighs, the motor isn’t capable of delivering to the same depth. If you want to get deeper into one of the large muscle groups, we recommend you look for a massage gun with a stronger motor. Compared to other models, this one’s missing a “wedge” nozzle. This can massage away lactic acid after a hard workout, for instance.
The Gymstick CairO Pro is ideal for those who prefer an attractive design over a strong motor. The long arm makes this massage gun an ideal choice if you mostly massage yourself. The weaker motor isn’t a big minus as long as you don't feel a strong need for a really deep massage. The CairO delivers excellent speed and a great battery life.
Superb low noise massage gun with practical app
Weight: 1.2 kg Height: 26 cm Width: 20 cm Depth: 6 cm Number of heads: 5 Vibration levels: 5 Speed: 1700– 2700 rpm Amplitude: 14 mm Noise level: 56–64 dB(A) Battery life: 180 min Guarantee: 1 year Accessories: Bluetooth/case for head
The Hypervolt 2 Pro is a popular massage gun used by many elite athletes worldwide, and we can see why. This massage gun delivers a comfortable and impressive massage technique, with a low noise level. It looks great too.
Hyperice has its own app that is surprisingly easy to use. By giving the app access to Apple Health, the range of programmes can also be customised to suit the workout you just did. Once you have selected a massage programme with the app, it automatically adjusts the speed of the massage gun. Hyperice is also compatible with the Strava and Garmin fitness apps.
Hyperice reduce noise levels by means of a special sliding technique, which is particularly evident in this massage gun. Given that it is equipped with such a powerful motor, it produces surprisingly little sound, which is a big plus if you want to use the gun in front of your TV or when travelling. It is also TSA approved, which means it can be packed in a piece of carry-on baggage and taken on board an aircraft. If you want a case for the massage gun, however, you need to buy it on the Hyperice website.
The package includes five different heads, each suitable for a special type of massage and muscle group.
The Hyperice Hypervolt 2 Pro is a top class massage gun, suitable for those who train a lot and have high demands. This is a great tool for both heating and recovery. The Hyperice app provides guidance for even more effective massage, and we like the fact it can be taken with you on the go. In order to give this massage gun a higher rating, we’d have liked it to include a case, as well as a longer guarantee.
Silent and compact massage gun with several vibration levels
Weight: 450 grams Height: 15.5 cm Width: 10 cm Depth: 4.5 cm Number of heads: 4 Vibration levels: 6 Speed: 1400-2800 rpm Amplitude: 6 mm Noise level: 55-63 dB(A) Battery life: 2-3 hrs Guarantee: 1 years Accessories: Case
The Gymstick Fascia Gun is very compact and the smallest massage gun in our test A neat little case is included, making the gun ideal to carry with you when travelling or to the gym. Although it’s small, it offers a full six vibration levels and the package includes four different nozzles.
This isn’t a professional massage gun, but a first-class choice for those on the go. It’s packed in a neat little case with space for all the accessories and charger. It charges with USB-C, which is an advantage as many other types of technical equipment in your home are charged in the same way. If you lose the charger, there’s a good chance that you have another one in your home or workplace. If you have a computer handy, you can conveniently charge the massage gun via the USB port.
The Fascia Gun is a really attractive object without standing out in any way. It has a convenient on/off button on the underside of the handle, which also shows the current vibration level in the form of a blue LED. Unfortunately, it doesn’t indicate the current battery status, so you’re recommended to keep the USB-C charger nearby in case the battery runs out.
Of course, the compact design makes it harder to reach muscles on your back on your own, and with the smaller size there always comes a slightly weaker motor. This makes it difficult to reach the muscles deeply, particularly in the larger muscle groups. Although it has a shorter amplitude and force than most other models in the test, it’s still quite sufficient for smaller muscle groups such as shoulders, arms and calves.
This mini-gun handles tired and tense muscles with a low sound volume. The muffled sound also makes it suitable for using on a train or plane without disturbing the other passengers too much.
The Gymstick Fascia Gun is ideal for those travelling light or for a quick and convenient massage during your coffee break. This is an affordable and compact massage gun for home, travel or work.
Quiet massage gun for those who want high speed and power
Weight: 1.3 kg Height: 25.4 cm Width: 17.9 cm Depth: 6.35 cm Number of heads: 5 Vibration levels: 3 Speed: 1800-3200 rpm Amplitude: 14 mm Noise level: 61-69 dB(A) Battery life: 150 min Guarantee: 1 years Accessories: Case for heads
The Hypervolt Plus is a popular massage pistol used by many sportspeople for both warming up and recovery. The Plus model is slightly stronger than its little brother and stands out with its high speed of 3200 rpm. We particularly like the Hyperice app, which synchronises your exercise data via your workout app (Strava, Garmin or Apple Health) and gives recommendations for a massage programme based on how you have worked out. The app connects your Hypervolt Plus via Bluetooth and adapts the mass speed automatically to the programme.
The Hypervolt Plus has an attractive design and a handle that’s comfortable to hold. It’s designed with a special sliding technology developed with aerospace researchers and gives a lower noise level. This is an obvious advantage if you want to massage sore muscles while you’re watching a film with your partner. On the lowest speed it works well without the noise level having a negative impact. On the higher speeds it gets difficult to hear what’s being said on the TV without turning up the volume.
The price tag includes five different heads in an attractive little case. We’d have liked a bigger case that would also hold the massage gun so you could more easily carry everything together. It has a generous battery life of over two hours and charges a flat battery to full in less than two hours. Unfortunately it doesn’t include an extra battery.
The Hypervolt Plus is a good massage pistol that suits people who work out regularly and need a tool for warming up, recovery and more in-depth massage. The discreet sound profile means you can use it pretty much everywhere without disturbing other people. The Hyperice app is a great aid for the new user who wants to use the tool in the best possible way. What reduces the score slightly is the hefty price tag and the short guarantee period of one year.
Affordable massage gun with several different nozzles
Weight: 800 grams Height: 21 cm Width: 18.5 cm Depth: 6 cm Number of heads: 5 Vibration levels: 3 Speed: 1200-2800 rpm Amplitude: 8 mm Noise level: 52-67 dB(A) Battery life: 3.5-5 hrs Guarantee: 1 years Accessories: Case
The Gymstick Massage Gun comes in a handy carrying case that includes the charger, instruction manual and five different nozzles. It has a strong enough motor to soften most muscle groups and the price tag is really good!
The mixture of a matte black colour and brushed steel is really attractive. The buttons along the handle are discreet, but light up blue when the massage gun is running. The back panel also lights up, this time with red LEDs. Because the buttons on the handle are so discreet, it’s easy to be fooled at first glance as it looks like you turn the gun on on the back instead. In comparison to its big brother, the CairO, the handle is shorter and this makes it more difficult to reach some muscles on your own.
The Massage Gun package contains five different nozzles, each with a special application. Given the low price tag, we think the number is generous, even if the nozzles feel slightly plasticky compared to more expensive models. It’s also unexpectedly powerful when massaging the larger muscle groups, even if it doesn’t get completely into the largest muscles when they’re tense. But it can be a good complement to natural massages.
The Gymstick Massage Gun is an affordable alternative for simple massages at home. It can also be a useful tool for professional masseurs who need help with some tasks at work.
Uncomplicated massage gun for those who want a quiet machine
Weight: 657 grams Height: 18 cm Width: 14 cm Depth: 5 cm Number of heads: 2 Vibration levels: 3 Speed: 2200-3200 rpm Amplitude: 10 mm Stall force: approx. 6 kg Noise level: 55-63.5 dB(A) Battery life: 2.5 hrs Guarantee: 1 years
The Hypervolt GO from Hyperice is a light and convenient massage gun that’s perfect for taking with you on holiday or to the gym. It has a very quiet motor and there are three speed settings that you can easily adjust by pressing the only button on the gun.
Just like Hyperice’s other models, the GO also has a simple but attractive design. It has an excellent grip that’s comfortable to hold and we feel that you can access most parts of the body despite it only having one handle. When the machine is switched on, an LED at the bottom of the handle lights up. The same light indicates how much battery is left. The battery life in the specifications is an impressive two hours, but in reality it’s significantly shorter, particularly if you’re running it on more than the lowest speed.
The speed and amplitude are reasonable on all three vibration levels, but unfortunately it struggles when you try to add more power. When our testers tried massaging little or deeply on the back of their thighs, the massage gun couldn’t cope when the resistance got too much.
The advantage of the Hypervolt GO is that it’s small and neat, and approved for carrying in hand luggage on flights. But we do think it should include some kind of case given the relatively hefty price tag. It also only includes two heads in the basic version, and that’s the fewest in our test of massage guns. If you want to buy an extra kit with more heads, it’s quite expensive. The guarantee period of one year is also the shortest in our test.
Overall the Hypervolt GO is a handy massage gun that works fine if you’re often travelling. It struggles to massage depth but if you’re happy with a shallow massage it works reasonably well. But given the price tag there are other massage guns in our test that perform better.
A massage gun can be useful for people who exercise a lot or sit still for long periods in front of the computer. The gun is particularly good at softening tired and stiff muscles, which makes it an excellent tool for both warming up and recovery. The more advanced massage guns can give both intensive and deep massage and you can choose between several different speeds.
