Top 14 Best Baby car seats of 2022

How we did the test

Our tests are independently conducted and reflect the test editor's honest and objective opinions. Selection of products and test results are in no way influenced by manufacturers, retailers or other internal or external parties.

We carry out our tests ourselves and test all products as they are intended to be used. This test focuses on the child’s comfort, product flexibility, the functions you get for your money and how long the seat can be used for. We didn’t test safety, but all baby car seats in the test are type approved and tested according to European regulations.

In our tests of baby car seats, we asked normal families with babies of different ages to test the car seats as part of their normal everyday activities. The seats were used with different types of cars and over a longer period to get an idea of how durable they are. The dimensions we state in the test should be seen as a comparison between the different models of baby car seat and not as an indication of how well a child of a certain length will fit into the seat. During the tests, we looked in detail at aspects including:

  • Installation: How easy is it to install the baby car seat in the car? Are there clear colour and/or sound indications for correct installation? How much space does the baby car seat occupy?

  • Functions: Does the baby car seat have an adjustable neck support? Is there a built-in sunshade? Does the car seat have other functions that make travelling easier?

  • Use: What’s it like to put the child in/remove them from the baby car seat? Is it easy to get at and attach the harness? What’s the baby car seat like to carry?

Our testers’ assessments of the baby car seats are then compared to their price, which forms the basis for the final score.

1. Maxi Cosi Pebble Pro i-Size – BEST CHOICE CAR SEAT 2022

Comfortable and cosy baby car seat with secure installation and intelligent harness

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.4 kg Base weight: 7.4 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 68 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 56 cm Seatbelt hook: Yes Hood: Yes, one position Harness: 3-point, raised with control on back of baby car seat

Maxi-Cosi Pebble Pro i-Size

The Pebble Pro i-Size baby car seat is compatible with a number of Isofix bases from Maxi Cosi, but can also be attached directly to the car using the seatbelt. This baby car seat was tested with Maxi Cosi’s 3WayFix base, which provides excellent feedback during installation. The risk of installing it wrong feels very small, as it uses green or red lights to show whether or not the three steps to install the car seat have been done correctly.

In terms of space, the Pebble Pro with a base doesn’t take up much more space in the car than similar solutions from other brands. The base is broad but still comfortable to sit beside. Clicking the baby car seat in and out of it works very well. It’s easy to find the right position so the car seat attaches properly to the base. To undo it again there are catches on both sides of the baby car seat. You just have to pull one of them forwards to be able to lift the Pebble Pro upwards.

The Maxi Cosi Pebble Pro i-Size gets maximum points for the child’s comfort. The infant insert that comes with it consists of two parts, which makes it even easier to adapt the baby car seat to the growing child. Both the insert and the baby car seat’s upholstery are soft and cosy. All of the fabrics remained in good condition even after being washed.

The harness too was praised by our testers. Just like previous versions of the Pebble, the shoulder straps are upwards when the harness is open. This makes it much easier to put it on the child. The padding of the straps can’t slide downwards, so the harness never cuts into the child’s neck. It also adds to the feeling of security that the straps can’t be adjusted for length when the harness is fastened. This means you don’t need to worry about them gliding out and getting longer during the journey. When you want to make the harness longer, it's great that it extends equally on both sides, even if you only pull out one shoulder strap.

The hood on the Pebble Pro i-Size gives satisfactory protection against the sun and consists of a screen that you attach to the handle. The handle itself is comfortable and the baby car seat feels a normal weight when you’re carrying or manoeuvring it. The overall impression is positive, with nothing omitted either in terms of the child’s comfort or secure car travel. The Maxi Cosi Pebble Pro i-Size is simply a really high quality baby car seat, with all the functions that both baby and parents could want.

2. Cybex Cloud Z i-Size – BEST PREMIUM CHOICE

Modern baby car seat with lie-flat position, long hood and base that can be rotated

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.8 kg Base weight: 7.7 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 67 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 60.5 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 3-point, raised with control on top of the neck support

Cybex Cloud Z i-Size

The Cybex Cloud Z i-Size baby car seat is used together with the Cybex Base Z Isofix base. It’s easy to install in the car, and if you're not experienced in this area there are indicators on the base which provides greater security. Green markings show clearly if the base is correctly installed, and if the baby car seat has clicked in correctly. The same base can then also be used with the rear-facing Sirona Z i-Size car seat.

When the baby car seat is fixed to the base, it can be rotated. In theory this is clever and makes it easier to put the child in or remove them from the car seat. In practice, however, you don’t use the function very often as you tend to take the entire baby car seat with you. But the ability to rotate the chair towards the car door is much more useful with a car seat for an older child on the base.

The Cloud Z i-Size is a spacious baby car seat with plenty of room for the growing baby’s head and shoulders. The neck support and harness is raised using a bracket on the top of the neck support. The harness straps were easy to tighten or loosen. But the padding on the straps didn’t feel particularly good. The shoulder pads have a tendency to slide off and disappear. And the padding on the crotch strap tends to get stuck underneath the child’s bottom.

The hood on the Cybex Cloud Z i-Size is top class. It’s utterly silent, can be set in several positions and when fully extended provides excellent sun protection. But the best function this baby car seat provides is the lie-flat position. You mustn’t use it in the car. But if you use the baby car seat outside the car, for example in the pushchair, it’s extremely useful to be able to create a flat sleeping area literally single handed. The back support can be folded down with the child in the baby car seat, which makes it even more convenient.

The weight of the Cloud Z i-Size is reasonable, given its functions. The handle has a comfortable design and the rounded shape of the baby car seat means the centre of gravity isn’t too far away when you're carrying it. It takes a little while to learn how to angle the car seat when you're inserting it into the base. But over time this becomes easy too.

If you’re intending to add the Cybex car seat for older children at a later stage, the Cloud Z i-Size together with the Base Z feels like a really good starting package for safe car journeys with your child. It has all the functions you’d want and more besides. Cybex haven’t skimped on comfort either for the child or the parent. This is what a modern baby car seat should look like!

3. BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1

Cosy and sturdy baby car seat with good hood and very convenient attachment in the base

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.5 kg Base weight: 6.2 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 65 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 58 cm Seatbelt hook: Yes Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 5-point, raised with control on back of car seat

BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size

The iZi Go Modular X1 is the updated baby car seat belonging to BeSafe’s popular Modular system. With the Modular, you use the same base for the baby car seat as for the rear-facing car seat for older children. This makes it easy to install, move and adapt the car seat to the child and your needs. The iZi Go Modular X1 has been fitted with BeSafe’s SIP+ side impact protection system built into the shell of the baby car seat, together with a well padded 5-point harness.

BeSafe’s Isofixbas for the Go Modular X1 is easy to install in the car, with clear green and red coloured areas that show whether or not you've done it right. The support leg beeps until it’s positioned correctly. Clicking the baby car seat into the base is incredibly simple. With the iZi Go Modular X1, you always get it right first time. Nor is it fiddly to remove the baby car seat from the base. At the front of the base is a catch which you press down, allowing you to lift the car seat upwards with the handle. The iZi Go Modular X1 can even be installed directly in the car using the car seatbelt.

The baby car seat is very cosy for the child to sit in. The harness has substantial padding which means the baby is held in a stable, secure position. In the earlier version of the baby car seat, the neck support seemed to be a bit too tight, but the Modular iZi Go X1 gives just the right amount of space. When the child grows, you remove the Newborn Hugger part – a wedge that flattens out the seat – so the baby has more space for their bottom and back. Using just one hand on the back of the baby car seat, you can then raise the neck support and harness simultaneously.

The harness on the iZi Go Modular X1 has broad, stiff straps that don’t twist. When you put the child into or remove them from the car seat, the harness can be hung to the side, using a magnetic bracket. The cover feels tough yet soft, and can be removed for washing. Although the instructions for how to get the cover back on again should ideally be a little more helpful than “pay attention when you remove it”.

The hood on the iZi Go Modular X1 can be positioned in a number of ways and gives very good protection against the sun. We’re impressed that BeSafe have succeeded in retaining all the things that were good about the predecessor while simultaneously adding lots of improvements. The BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1 is an easy-to-use, comfortable and extremely convenient baby car seat that’s worth the price in every way.

4. Maxi-Cosi Coral

Secure and easy-to-install baby car seat with a very innovative and convenient carrying solution

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: No Car seat weight: Entire baby car seat 5.4 kg, Soft Carrier only 1.9 kg Base weight: 7.4 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 68 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 58 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 3-point, can’t be height adjusted

Maxi-Cosi Coral i-size

Regardless of how much progress has been made within the field of car seats for children over the last decade, there still seems to be room for more innovation. And the Maxi-Cosi Coral is a good example of that.

The Coral has been tested and approved according to the current safety standard (R129/03 i-Size) and can be installed directly using the car seatbelt or with Maxi-Cosi’s Isofix base. The installation of both the base and the baby car seat is ridiculously easy, with sound, light and colour to guide you. But thus far the Coral is no different to Maxi-Cosi’s other baby car seats.

Incredibly convenient solution for easy carrying

Anyone who’s ever carried a baby car seat, particularly as a new mother, knows how heavy and bulky they are. And this is where the Coral differs significantly. Because the baby car seat consists of two parts. A harder shell and a softer insert – the Soft Carrier – which you can easily remove and carry separately in its own handle. The Soft Carrier also weighs less than 2 kg, which is half as much as most other baby car seats. This makes carrying your child to and from the car easy and convenient.

And with the infant insert that comes with the car seat, the baby is comfortable in the Coral right from birth. The harness works perfectly and the straps don’t twist and chafe. However, you can’t fasten the harness up so it’s out of the way when you’re putting it on the child. Nor can you adjust the shoulder attachment of the harness in terms of height. The hood on this baby car seat gets high marks and provides good shade.

Wonderfully convenient solution for anyone travelling by car a lot

If you want to use the Maxi-Cosi Coral with a pushchair, you can. In this case, you use the complete baby car seat, both the insert and the shell. But the Coral has slightly different attachments than other baby car seats from Maxi-Cosi, so it unfortunately isn’t compatible with all Maxi-Cosi adapters.

During the test period, the Maxi-Cosi Coral gave no problems at all, and it was very popular with our testers. If you're taking your child on a car journey, a good baby car seat is an absolute must. But whether a baby car seat with a removable insert is a good buy depends entirely on your everyday life with your baby. If you're often on the go and use the car as your main means of transport, the Maxi-Cosi Coral can quickly become the product that makes life as a parent 1000 times more convenient.

5. Bugaboo Turtle Air by Nuna

Easy-to-use baby car seat that’s ideal for anyone who wants to match their Bugaboo stroller

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 3 kg Base weight: No information External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 69 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 60 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 3-point, raised with control on back of baby car seat

Bugaboo Turtle Air by Nuna

Nuna have worked with Bugaboo, the stroller brand, to create a baby car seat; the Bugaboo Turtle Air by Nuna. The baby car seat is very stylish and matches the design of Bugaboo’s strollers but is also compatible with other brands. No matter which stroller you attach the baby car seat to, you must use an adapter. The Turtle Air has the same attachments as the Maxi Cosi, so it’s compatible with most manufacturers’ Maxi Cosi adapters.

The Turtle Air can be fitted directly to the car seat using the seat belt, or with the Bugaboo Turtle Air by Nuna Isofix wingbase. The base is easy to install in the car, with clear green and red markings indicating whether the Isofix brackets and support legs are correctly installed. On the base there’s a similar marking to show whether the baby car seat has properly clicked into the base.

Must be rotated into the base

One detail that (figuratively and literally) stands out on the Isofix base is the two wings that act as additional side impact protection. They unfold automatically, but can be folded manually on either side if you need a passenger to sit next to the base. The position of the wings means you have to lift the baby car seat in short edge first, and then rotate it with the long edge towards the car door before the Turtle Air can be clicked into the base. It’s a bit fiddly at first but you get used to it.

To lift out the baby car seat, you undo a catch on the front of the base. The catch is quite low down, but still easily accessible. Overall, the Turtle Air has functions that are easy to use and feel well considered. One example is the unusually well-designed hood, which not only provides good shade, but also has an additional sun visor, ventilation hatch and sunscreen mesh secured to the foot end of the baby car seat with a magnetic attachment.

Baby car seat suitable for both newborn and larger children

The Turtle Air is a baby car seat that provides good comfort for your baby. A newborn fits into the car seat just as well as a five-month old. The accompanying infant insert is a thick pad that’s easily inserted and removed. The 3-point harness is quick to attach, and can be height adjusted as your baby grows. If there’s one part that doesn’t really live up to expectations, it’s the harness pads. These are bulky and constantly slide around (or off), making it difficult to check whether the harness strap has got twisted.

The baby car seat is lightweight and comfortable to carry, although we’d have liked the part of the handle that’s padded and covered in imitation leather to have been a bit wider than 13.5 cm. The upholstery is ribbed and shiny, making it easy to wipe off stains. In fact, the Bugaboo Turtle Air By Nuna is so good that the only things to complain about are at detail level. The Turtle Air is good for anyone who wants a convenient and safe car journey with their child, and ideal for the style-conscious parent who wants their baby car seat to match their Bugaboo stroller.

6. Britax BABY-SAFE iSENSE

Spacious baby car seat that can be rotated and has lighting – ideal for winter babies

Attachment method: Isofix base Britax Flex Base iSense Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.8 kg Base weight: 9.5 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 67 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 58 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, one position Harness: 5-point, raised with control on back of car seat

Britax Baby-Safe iSense i-size

The Britax Baby-Safe iSense is a baby car seat with innovative lighting both in the seat and on the outside. The internal lighting is intended to help parents see their child better during the car journey. It works, but the lowest setting produces a relatively weak light. We’d also have liked to be able to switch the light on and off remotely. As it stands, you have to do everything directly on the car seat.

The external lighting is intended to guide the baby car seat into place when you’re attaching it to the base or stroller, and also as safety lighting, so you’re more visible when you carry the car seat over a car park or are pushing the stroller on a winter evening. Whether or not this is useful to you depends how you’re going to use the car seat. During the summer, the lights are pretty much pointless. If you have a baby in the autumn and are going to be out in traffic a lot in the winter, or you often drive your car at night, the lighting makes things easier and safer. You charge the baby car seat with mini-USB, and it has an estimated battery life of 6-8 hours.

Baby car seat that can rotate and be angled on the base

The Britax Baby-Safe iSense can be used separately in the car, but if you choose to install the baby car seat with its base, you get two very practical functions. One is that you can then angle the baby car seat, so the child isn’t sitting so upright that their head falls forward as they sleep – which is a common problem in dished car seats. And the other is that you can rotate the baby car seat on the base, which makes it easier when you’re putting your baby into or taking them out of the car seat.

But the rotation function is superfluous if you rarely leave the car seat in the car, because then you’ll be putting your baby in or removing them from the car seat elsewhere, like at home or on the stroller. It’s worth knowing that the Britax Baby-Safe iSense doesn’t have the same attachments as most other baby car seats from Britax. If you want to use the Baby-Safe iSense on a stroller, you need to buy the stroller’s Maxi Cosi adapters so you can dock it with the stroller.

Spacious baby car seat with fun functions

Sitting comfort for the child is good. The Baby-Safe iSense has a spacious seat, and a 10-month-old baby of normal length will still be comfortable, even though the harness may be a little tight when you’re putting it on. The infant insert that comes with the car seat has a good fit and is built up a little extra around the baby’s sides. The baby car seat has a hood that attaches to the handle and gives OK but not impressively good shade from the sun.

Using the Britax Baby-Safe iSense in everyday life is generally problem-free. It’s quick to install, but sometimes it takes a while to find the right position when you want to dock it with the base. On the other hand, it’s very easy to lift off. The fact that a baby car seat has lighting or can be rotated isn’t an essential function. But if you travel by car a lot (particularly in the autumn and winter), they are both practical and quite nice functions that make travelling with your baby a little easier.

7. Cybex Aton M i-Size

Easy-to-use and attractively designed baby car seat with high levels of safety and function

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.5 kg Base weight: 6.4 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 65 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 56 cm Seatbelt hook: None Hood: Yes, four positions Harness: 3-point, raised automatically with neck support

Cybex Aton M i-Size

The Cybex Aton M i-Size baby car seat is also available as a normal Aton M, and it’s important to make sure you don’t mix the two up. The Aton M i-Size has been tested against the latest safety regulations, which mean the baby car seat should be able to withstand a side impact. The baby car seat can be installed with the same base that can later be used with the rear-facing Sirona M2 i-Size car seat from Cybex. The base is installed with Isofix attachments and there are clear colour indications that show if it’s been inserted correctly. The same applies to the baby car seat. When it’s been clicked into the base, all of the coloured areas should be green to show that the car seat is safe to use. The Aton M i-Size is spacious enough for the slightly larger baby, but also easy to adapt to the newborn. When the neck support is in the lowest position, the seat area flattens out somewhat so the newborn can sit in a better position. The baby car seat also includes an infant insert that you remove when the child is longer than 61 cm, which usually means around 3 months.

The overall impression created by the Cybex Aton M i-Size is very good. The baby car seat both looks and feels luxurious in terms of the materials used, but the reinforced sides and carefully designed details are also evidence that safety is a high priority. The handle has a good shape and can be carried comfortably over your arm. The harness straps are easy to loosen and rather stiffer to tighten, but not difficult. The shoulder straps have comfortable padding so the straps don’t cut into the child’s neck. The baby car seat’s built-in neck support can be easily height adjusted as the child grows, and the harness is raised with the neck support so it’s always in the right position. The hood is long and fully extended provides extremely good protection against the sun’s rays. From a parental perspective, the most important thing about a baby car seat is ultimately always how comfortable the child is, and here there’s absolutely nothing negative to say about the Aton M i-Size. The baby car seat gets an extra point for keeping the child cool better than other baby car seats, which quickly lead to a sweaty and damp back. The more car seats Cybex launches, the clearer it is how good they are in terms of quality, and the Aton M i-Size is a good example of that.

8. Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix

Low weight, easy to carry baby car seat with a comfortable handle and convenient sunshade

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: No Car seat weight: 3.45 kg Base weight: 8.75 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 66 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 56 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, 1 position Harness: 3-point

Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix

The Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix is one of the lightest baby car seats on the market. The lightweight means that you are happy to use the car seat for activities even outside the car, such as for a dining or rocking chair. You can also install it on a large number of pushchair chassis. The car seat has a stylish, functional design with soft and comfortable padding. A removable cushion adapts the car seat to the baby’s C-shaped spine. And for other passengers, it’s actually OK sitting next to this car seat is narrow and doesn’t have any sharp edges that stick out sideways.

The CabrioFix has a 3-point seatbelt, but has exactly the same safety classification as car seats with 5-point seatbelts. The shoulder padding on the seatbelt can slide down towards the buckle, but this doesn’t affect comfort levels for the child. The upholstery is high quality and easy to wipe off, but fiddly to put back after it’s been washed. We had to check the manual to get this right. The hood is neat and screens off the child’s surroundings well. The fabric doesn’t rustle and is attached with hooks on the handle.

The base has both Isofix and seatbelt attachments, so it suits many car models, making it easy to lend the baby car seat to grandparents. The car seat and base each have a pocket for manuals together with good, clear colour indicators – and this is where Maxi-Cosi are best in their class. The button to undo the shoulder belt is a little stiff, and the button to undo the car seat from the base is positioned badly where large hands will easily crack their knuckles against the top of the support leg. But overall this is a very good baby car seat. It’s also one of the market’s most popular models – and we can see why.

Rather fiddly to put the cover back on

9. Doona+ baby car seat

Spacious baby car seat that’s easy to install in the car and also works as a pushchair

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: No Car seat weight: 7 kg Base weight: 7.2 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 63.5 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 45 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 57.5 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 5-point

Doona Doona+ Infant Car Seat

The Doona+ is a baby car seat and pushchair in one – making it a unique product on the market just now. When you want to use it as a pushchair, you fold out the wheels and the carrying handle extends into a telescopic handle – a simple and convenient solution. The baby car seat includes an infant insert and can be used from birth. The maximum weight is 13 kg and in terms of space the head support is on the tight side, but the actual seat is roomy. The baby car seat has a good angle that means the child’s head doesn’t fall forward too easily. The 5-point harness is easy to tighten so the child is held safely. The baby car seat feels very modern except in respect that the harness must be manually re-configured when the child grows – in other words the shoulder attachments and neck support can’t be raised in a single simple manoeuvre. Nor is there a hook for the harness straps, which makes things easier when you’re putting the child into it. But the Doona+ has a really good, beak-shaped hood which can be adjusted in several different steps and provides very good shade. You can also buy extra sunshades. The carrying handle of the baby car seat is comfortable and rounded.

Installing the Doona+ in the car can be done either using the seatbelt or the Isofix base. The base is very easy to get into the right place even if you’ve never done this before. Removing the car seat from the base is done with a two-stage button. During the car journey, the Doona’s handle should be folded down as a roll bar with the back support in front of the child. The Doona+ is heavier than other baby car seats and slightly bigger, which makes it rather bulky to carry. But on the other hand you only have to carry it up or down stairs because it can be used as a pushchair the rest of the time. As a pushchair, the Doona+ his very small but it roles very well and the wheels can cope with kerbs and minor bumps without problems. Because the wheels get dirty, the car seat includes protection for the car’s upholstery. If you are planning to use the pushchair function, the Doona+ isn’t good value. But if you can see the point of not having to wake up a child who’s fallen asleep during the car journey when you need to quickly pop in to a shop and buy dinner, the Doona+ is an incredibly convenient and well constructed solution that we definitely recommend.

10. Axkid Modukid Infant

Spacious baby car seat with easy to install base, low weight and comfortable carrying handle

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: No Car seat weight: 3.7 kg Base weight: 7 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 66 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 43 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 54 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, several positions Harness: 3-point, manually height adjusted

Axkid Modukid Infant i-size

The Modukid Infant is a baby car seat that’s actually the first product from Axkid’s Modukid car seat range. After the child has outgrown the baby car seat, you switch over to the rear facing Modukid Seat, which can be attached to the same Isofix base. The base is very easy to install. It has clear catches that are easy to use, and the base shows green when the Isofix attachments and baby car seat have been correctly installed. The fact that the length of the Isofix arms can be adjusted also makes it easier to use the base with different types of car.

For everyday use, the Modukid Infant works well. It’s very easy to click the baby car seat into the base, and it always works first time. Removing the baby car seat is done by holding in a catch on the front of the base. This is rather stiff sometimes. The Axkid Modukid Infant takes up a normal amount of space in the car and is comfortable to sit beside.

The Modukid Infant provides plenty of space. The baby car seat comes with a two part infant insert to be used during the child’s first few months. The harness can be adjusted vertically at the shoulders, but it must be reconfigured manually. This isn’t difficult, but it takes a little while and it’s not something you can do while the baby car seat is in the car. Otherwise the harness is convenient to use. The straps don’t twist and the shoulder protection stays in place, which is helpful. However, the padding on the crotch strap tends to come off and follow along when you lift the child out.

The main negative with the Modukid Infant is that in some ways it gives a rather cheap impression. Some of the buttons feel a bit plasticky. But above all its hood that isn’t of the same high standard as the rest of the baby car seat. It’s flimsy and noisy when you open or close it. And the shade it provides is barely acceptable. Given that it disturbs the child more than it protects them, this baby car seat could just as well have done without it. The rubberised surface on the handle also wears quickly.

But the handle is comfortable to have over your arm to carry the car seat and the Modukid Infant is light. It has the same attachments as Maxi Cosi’s baby car seat, so it’s compatible with pushchairs with Maxi Cosi adapters. The cover is sturdy and very easy to wipe clean, but can also be removed completely for sheen washing. The Axkid Modukid Infant feels like it’s good value and safe, as it comes with an extra side impact protector. The only thing that reduces the score is the uneven quality.

11. Maxi Cosi Rock

Good value baby car seat with removable infant insert, low weight and cosy seat area

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: No Car seat weight: 3.9 kg Base weight: 8.3 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 67 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 56 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, one position Harness: 3-point, can’t be height adjusted

Maxi-Cosi Rock

The Maxi Cosi Rock is an i-Size baby car seat for a slightly lower price than what you usually pay for more modern baby car seats approved according to i-Size (R129). To keep down the overall costs, Maxi Cosi have reduced the functions but focused on the baby car seat meeting the higher safety standards. But if you haven’t previously used a baby car seat you probably won’t notice this.

You can choose between installing the baby car seat in the car directly using the seatbelt or clicking it into Maxi Cosi’s FamilyFix One i-Size base unit. You install the base in the car with Isofix attachments. When the child outgrows the Maxi Cosi Rock, you can instead attach the rear-facing Pearl i-Size car seat to the same base. It’s easy to click the baby car seat into the base, and it has clear indications that show whether or not the installation has been done correctly.

The Rock is a convenient baby car seat with a relatively low weight. The handle has a rounded shape, which means it tends to press against your body when you’re carrying it. And unfortunately this isn’t entirely comfortable. The baby car seat has a simpler hood, consisting of a screen you attach to the handle. This provides limited sun protection.

When you use the Maxi Cosi Rock for a newborn it feels very cosy. The infant insert hugs the child and holds their head in the right position. When the child grows a little you remove the insert to create more space in the seat. You can’t height adjust the harness shoulder straps at all. The infant insert pulls the straps down a little to fit a newborn child better. The fact that you can’t even reconfigure the harness manually feels like a function that Maxi Cosi perhaps shouldn’t have economised on.

And if you want those little extras – like a good sunshade and adjustable neck support – you should perhaps look elsewhere. But all of the important basic functions are here. The Rock is a baby car seat with high levels of comfort for the child. It’s easy to carry and easy to use. Fastening the harness is straightforward and it can easily be tightened and loosened. So the Maxi Cosi Rock feels both secure and, for what you get, very good value.

12. Cybex Aton 5

Substantial feeling baby car seat with good hood and high quality upholstery

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 5 kg Base weight: 5.4 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 64 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 44 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 58 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, four positions Harness: 3-point, raised automatically with neck support

Cybex Aton 5

Cybex divide their car seats into different categories: silver, gold and platinum. The Aton 5 is one of Cybex’s baby car seats in the gold category and is based on the same shape as its predecessor, the Aton 4, but with updates to the construction of the car seat shell. The Aton 5 has a hood with four different positions that covers the child well. It doesn’t make any noise when you open or close it. By pulling on a loop on the back of the neck support, you can adjust the height of the internal harness. The Isofix base has a narrow, dished shape which makes it easy to fit in other car seats or passengers decided. However, the seat belt holder on the baby car seat can cause chafing for anyone sitting next to it.

The Cybex Aton 5 it is also relatively narrow when it comes to the baby car seat itself, which means that a larger child may grow out of it more quickly. The fit is narrow because the less space there is between the baby and the car seat, the safer the baby car seat is. The Aton 5 has a relatively upright sitting position, which more active babies may appreciate. However this brings with it a slightly greater risk of the baby’s head tipping forward when they’re asleep – but the angle also depends on the model of the car. It’s easy to attach the base in the car and the baby car seat in the base. The instructions are clear and straightforward. The carrying handle on the Aton 5 has a comfortable shape. Although the Aton 5 is OK in terms of weight, it’s at the heavier end of the scale. The fabric feels tough and dirt resistant, and the Cybex baby car seat can be used on pushchairs with the same adapters as for Maxi Cosi and BeSafe seats. The Cybex Aton 5 is a versatile and easy to use baby car seat that has all of the most important functions.

13. Cybex Cloud Q

Unique foldout lie-flat position and very good hood

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 5.8 kg Base weight: 5.4 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 68 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 43 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 57 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, four positions Harness: 3-point, raised automatically with neck support

Cybex Cloud Q

With their Cloud Q, Cybex have constructed a baby car seat that feels unique. At first glance it’s similar to the Aton 4 in terms of shape, and in the car it’s also broadly the same. The magical thing with the Cloud Q happens when you take it out of the car, either to carry it or to attach to the pushchair. A simple, one-handed control allows you to transform the baby car seat from a dished shape to what’s essentially a lie-flat position. You mustn’t use the function during car journeys, but if you often travel by car it helps if the child has a better sleeping position when you have to take the baby car seat with you. You can move the Cloud Q into lying position while the child is in the car seat. The lying area is very spacious and even children over six months have plenty of room. However, in its dished form the baby car seat is on the narrow side, for the same reasons as the Aton 4 – the less space around the child in case of an impact, the better.

The hood on the Cloud Q can be opened in four steps and provides excellent cover. However, you have to have the handle in a particular position for the hood not to catch on it when you open it. The 3-point harness on the Cloud Q is raised automatically when you adjust the height of the neck support, and the shoulder strap pads are very soft so there’s no chafing. Unfortunately the crotch strap tends to slide down in the baby car seat when you put the child in, so you always have to pull it out from under the baby’s bottom again before you can fasten the harness. The big disadvantage with the Cybex Cloud Q, apart from it being expensive is that the clever lie-flat function makes the baby car seat much heavier. But whether this is important will depend on how you plan to use the baby car seat. If you’re never going to remove it from the car, the Cloud Q is unnecessarily expensive. But for a family that’s often out in the car, or changing between pushchair and car a lot, this can be a very useful investment.

14. Silver Cross Simplicity

Easy to install the base and baby car seat in the car, includes a clever apron

Attachment method: Isofix base Seatbelt attachment possible?: Yes, with the car’s 3-point seatbelt Extendable back/neck support: Yes Car seat weight: 4.3 kg Base weight: 7.3 kg External dimensions (Length) (with handle raised): 68 cm External dimensions (Width) (with handle raised): 41 cm External dimensions (Height) (with handle raised): 55 cm Seatbelt hook: No Hood: Yes, two positions Harness: 5-point, raised automatically with neck support

Silver Cross Simplicity

The Silver Cross Simplicity base is easy to use and has clear colour indications to tell you whether you’ve installed it correctly in the car. Clicking in the baby car seat was also straightforward. However, the Simplicity baby car seat feels a bit plasticky and the upholstery is a bit too porous for our taste. The fabric readily absorbs dirt and baby vomit. The padding on the back sometimes slides sideways and the car seat is narrow over the shoulders. It’s difficult to get the head of a normal sized baby of 5-6 months far enough back for them to be properly comfortable. This means there is a major risk that the child’s head will tip forward when you break if the child is asleep.

The harness on the Silver Cross Simplicity can be height adjusted to several different positions. You access the catch for this by opening a hatch on the back of the baby car seat. And you have to squeeze quite hard to make sure that the harness is firmly attached in its new position. The Silver Cross Simplicity includes a hood and an apron, which is a cover that acts as a kind of thinner footmuff. The hood is very short and doesn’t actually do anything at all. The apron works best for very young infants before the child’s legs have got so long that their feet protrude. You attach it with elasticated straps around the hooks intended to hold the seatbelt in place if the baby car seat is attached to the car with the seatbelt. It isn’t padded, but provides some protection against wind and rain, which is very useful if you’re carrying the baby car seat outdoors for short distances in the winter. But given the price class for both baby car seat and base, we’d have preferred to see a better sunshade and better material choices.

Everything to Know about baby car seat

When your baby travels in the car, they should sit in a specially designed baby car seat. Baby car seats are available in many different variants, with more or less advanced functions and in varying price classes. Some car seats can be attached directly to the car using a seatbelt, but the most convenient solution is often to use a base. There are bases that can be attached using the car seatbelt and others that use the Isofix attachment system, which consists of two metal brackets anchored to the car chassis. The advantage of a base is that it makes it significantly easier to put the entire car seat into the car or remove it, for example if you want to carry the child in the car seat or attach it to the pushchair. It’s also more difficult to install a base incorrectly, which makes the combination of car seat + base the safest option.

A car seat can have many different functions. They usually have a carrying handle, but there can also be a hood, removable cushions, an adjustable harness, an extendable back support etc. Baby car seats are available with both 3 and 5-point harnesses. A baby car seat means the child sits in a more horizontal position than in car seats for older children. This is to avoid overloading the child’s spine.

Why you should have a base for your baby car seat

The biggest danger in an accident is that the car seat isn’t correctly installed. A recent survey found that two-thirds of child car seats in the UK are incorrectly installed. Even though the figure for baby car seats is better, it’s still worrying that many parents don’t take crash safety seriously.

A baby car seat without a base is installed using the car’s 3-point seatbelt. Many people think this is a complicated procedure, and it has to be repeated every time you put the baby car seat in the car. In a stressful situation, there’s a risk that this won’t be done correctly. Any installation problem with a car seat can cause serious injury. You need to use a long length of seatbelt to attach a baby car seat without a base. If this is done over a long period, the fully extended seatbelt can develop fatigue damage in the spring mechanism. In the worst case this can be so badly damaged that the entire seatbelt mechanism must be replaced. Some cars have 3-point seatbelts that are too short to install a baby car seat without a base. Examples of this include the SAAB 9-5, Opel Astra and 1990s Volvos.

A base is easy to install, either with Isofix attachments or mechanical installation, or using the car’s 3-point seatbelt. This makes the base a more permanent installation in the car. Then you simply dock the baby car seat in the base. This also means you can remove a sleeping child from the car without having to wake them.
